Suggested Essay Organization – (do it this way)
Paragraph 1:
A strong introduction – a few sentences that offer a taste of background information that contextualizes who or what your essay is about.
A thesis statement – a strong, provable, specific argument that takes a stance and directly answers one or more questions listed in the final essay prompt. Your thesis statement should appear at the end of your first paragraph, and no where else! Underline your thesis statement.
Paragraph 2:
Background information – who or what is your topic? How, and under what circumstances, did this individual, movement, idea, system, etc, come to serve the American people? Why is your topic important? Describe and introduce your topic thoroughly – to someone who is not a member of our class. Always connect back to your thesis statement – prove yourself!

Paragraph 3:

Feedback about proposal paper from TA: I think this is an interesting topic, and I appreciate the research you have done so far. However, I’d like to highlight and restate some important issues that I have mentioned in texts, and you’ll need to address them in your final paper: 1. In terms of the topic, the main issue would be that this is a very ambitious project, and the topic is too broad. You really need to narrow it down to a manageable scale for your final paper. The focus is super vague right now, and you need to choose one specific period and maybe do a case study of one kind of the portable camera. 2. In terms of the historical questions, I don’t really see explicit historical questions in your paper. The paper feels more like a summary of the camera development instead of an archive-based research. You need to narrow down your topics and find your historical questions first. 3. In terms of the sources, this is the biggest issue in your proposal. I didn’t see any primary sources you’ve found. Without the archive in hand, it’s very hard for you to narrow down your topic. 4. In terms of the analysis, since you don’t really have the sources in your paper, there’s not much analysis of the sources. 5. You also need to input proper citations with the correct format. You don’t have to revise your proposal, but please do show significant changes and advancements in your final paper.

Need to write a research paper on Mao Zedong and Xi Jingping and how their absolute power. Need to discuss how the role of the communist party (and how it leads to unchecked power both in form but also because citizens can only vote for CCP member). Need to discuss the consequences of this lack of checks and balances in particular there are lots of human rights issues under Xi (there is a human rights report that can be cited). They basically have a lust for power and no regard for the interests of the people.

1. Why were some “barbarians” more successful in creating enduring kingdoms than others in early medieval Europe from the 5th to the 10th centuries? What were the most lasting consequences of both the successes and failures of “barbarian” rule in these various places during this period?
2. Compare and contrast what it meant to be Christian in the 5th, 10th, and 15th centuries C.E. Analyze in terms of the beliefs and practices of the major groups, including the Church and its clergy, that made up medieval European society during each of these periods. 3. The movement of people is a recurring theme in medieval history. Identify the main phases of these movements from the 3rd to the 15th centuries. Compare and contrast their forms, motives, and impacts, analyzing what they had in common and how they differed as Europe evolved during the Middle Ages. 4. Analyze the status of women as it evolved in medieval society from late Antiquity up to the Renaissance and the kinds of attitudes expressed about them and their behavior. What changed most and what remained the most unchanged? What avenues, if any, existed over time for medieval women to realize more expression and control over their lives? 5. As Roman and then early European society became more Christian, so it increasingly became what one recent historian has described as a “persecuting society” during the Middle Ages, especially after the 11th century. Does the evidence we’ve considered this semester in our readings support this claim or not? Consider in terms of evolving forms of persecution, its scale and duration, why certain groups were targeted, and what attempts, if any, were made to prevent or mitigate its effects. 6. Periods of rising insecurity punctuate the history of medieval Europe from the 3rd century C.E. to the 14th century. Compare and contrast the major periods of insecurity and instability that occurred during the Middle Ages as well as their ensuing recoveries. What accounts for their similarities and differences? 1. Do I open with an introduction that lays out all the parts of the question and situates the topic in historical context? 2. Do I address each part of the question using only the images and primary sources provided on the course site and in our textbook? Don’t use outside materials!
3. Do I use paragraphs to group together at least two sources/images to support each of my main points as I address each part of the question? Three is even better!
4. Do I identify each image and source’s point of view? Who wrote it? When? Audience and purpose? Kind of document? Don’t just number the source!
5. Do I analyze how the sources relate to the question or do I simply just describe them with little reference back to the question?
6. Do I make sweeping generalizations and use anachronisms*? Or instead do I limit my analysis to what the evidence supports and keep focused on the historical context?
7. Do I address change over time in my analysis? Do I use the textbook to connect my essay to relevant historical trends?
8. Do the sections of my essay buiild one to the next? How does the point I just made in one paragraph lead to the next one I plan to make?
9. Do I close with a conclusion that sums up the main takeaways of the essay, including change over time?
10. Did I proofread my essay to correct errors and improve its clarity and organization?
* An anachronism is a chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of people, events, objects, language terms and customs from different time periods. Anything that is out of its historical time and place is an anachronism. A common example is to apply standards and norms from today that were different from those in the past, to say, for example, that people have always wanted to be equal or that women have always worked in the home. Those are both sweeping generalizations and anachronistic.

How do the life and historical representations of Amelio Robles emphasize the process of remembering the Mexican Revolution? Describe the two main “versions” of his life as portrayed in Cano’s article. Why does Cano say he has been remembered in such dramatically different ways? Make sure you incorporate and analyze a direct quotation from Cano’s article as support for your claim in this paragraph.
Tip: start each paragraph with a topic sentence that answers the question, use the rest of the paragraph to analyze evidence to support your point.
You will need to incorporate evidence from lecture/discussion as well as Cano’s article.

Citations are essential! A citation shows that you have support for your own claims AND what sources have influenced your ideas. You need to give a citation for direct quotations AND for paraphrases of ideas. You will likely have multiple citations in each paragraph.
Grading
Complete answers will have at least THREE paragraphs, one for each of the sets of questions given above. You must incorporate lecture/discussion citations as well as quotation/reference to Cano’s article.
Responses without appropriate quotations AND citations will earn half credit or less.

And, of course, the essays must be your own work.

To fully answer the question you select, you should include specific examples from the entire time period for the midterm: 1870s to 1945.
