Identify and explain the various sources used by the authors of Chapter 7 in After the Fact to support their arguments.
Explain how those sources are used to construct their argument.
Identify and explain how historians use primary and secondary sources, as well as methods from other disciplines to explain the past. How does interacting with other disciplines affect how historians are able to interpret the past?
Using the Gorn article, “The Historians’ Dilemma,” to support your response, explain how historians overcome some ethical challenges they face in their work.

I have added the After the Fact chapter needed to complete part of this assignment. Use three scholarly sources in addition to the book.

Your response paper should measure approximately 3-4 typed, double-spaced pages and should employ standard font sizes (11- or 12-point), font styles (e.g., Cambria, Calibri, or Times New Roman), and margin sizes (1-inch). It should also include an MLA-style heading, page numbers, and Works Cited page.

World War I marked a critical juncture in global history, and the United States’ decision to enter the conflict had far-reaching implications, but the aftermath of World War I brought about an even more profound mix of challenges and opportunities for postwar America. The war had significant social, economic, and political impacts on the nation. The economy experienced a post-war recession as wartime industries scaled down, leading to an initial period of readjustment. However, the war also ignited industrial growth, as the demand for goods increased, and technological innovations progressed. The war’s societal effects were far-reaching, influencing gender dynamics with women’s expanded participation in the workforce and suffrage movement. Racial tensions and the Great Migration were intensified as African Americans migrated northward for job opportunities, leading to increased urbanization and contributing to the civil rights movement.
The United States’ involvement in World War I had a significant impact on American society and contributed to many changes. Which of these impacts do you think were the most crucial and had the greatest impact on American citizens?

In many ways, the 1960s was a decade of divisions in America. In your estimation, what was the most polarizing issue in American society at this time? What were the sources of this division? Do these issues still resonate today?

Write an analytical essay utilizing the assigned primary and secondary source accounts on Francis Drake and John (“Jack”) Ward. In addition to the assigned readings provided above (and in Brightspace), you should locate and review at least one additional primary source account each for Drake and Ward in the Early English Books Online (EEBO) database and in New Light on Drake (via Hannon Library).
Your essay should critically compare and contrast Drake and Ward. Some analytical elements to consider: the sources themselves (biases/perspective/intended audience), alleged motivations of the pirates, objectives and goals of the pirates, relative and specific successes and failures, organization of the ship/crew, areas of operation, intended targets, the legacy/historical reputation and significance of each. In your conclusion, you should indicate whether you would rather have served under Drake or Ward and your reasoning. Be sure to properly cite all of your sources, both in footnotes and a Bibliography/Works Cited section.

In this discussion I want you to provide me with your concluding thoughts about the topics you learned during the course. I do not want you to focus on all that you learned, but two clear topics (narrow ones, not something vague like civil rights) that you found of interest. In order to earn full points, you need to be specific about two topics that you learned about, and put them in context. That means, show that you ” get” why those topics are important, what happened before, after, etc. Do not hunt and peck for information, but put it in context. Show mastery of those two narrow topics (for example, “civil rights” is not a topic, it is too broad, something like Jim Crow is too broad, as well). The topics you choose must have been discussed in this course, in our discussions and 8 weeks together. You need clear paragraphs, an intro, and a conclusion. I expect a couple of paragraphs, at least.
