  • Title: Exploring the Layers of Meaning and the Impact of Means of Transmission in Creative Works.

    Overview
Creative works have multiple layers of meaning that come from the creator’s intentions for the work and the audience’s interpretation. The creator’s purpose for creating the work is often an expression of their individual and cultural values and perspectives. The audience also brings their own values and perspectives to their understanding of the work. The means of transmission for a creative work – the way the work is shared with an audience – can also affect the audience’s interpretation. In this assignment, you will explore the layers of meaning of a creative work and the effect of its means of transmission.
    Directions
For this journal, you will reflect on the layers of meaning of creative works. You will describe how the means of transmission affect the interpretation of a creative work. Specifically, you must address the following:
Define what is meant by layers of meaning in a creative work.
How is the subject of the creative work a part of the layers of meaning?
How does a creator’s individual perspectives and cultural values relate to a creative work?
What ideas, values, and emotions that may be present in a work impact the layers of meaning?
Describe how the means of transmission of a creative work affects its interpretation by an audience.
How would experiencing the work be different depending on the means of transmission?
What other interpretations of the work could exist if the work were transmitted in a different way?
Explain the value of layers of meaning in a creative work.
Reflect on why the layers of meaning are important to interpreting a creative work.
    What to Submit
Submit your paper as a 1- to 2-page Microsoft Word document with 12-point Times New Roman font, double spacing, and one-inch margins. No sources are required. However, if you choose to use sources, follow APA citation guidelines when citing the sources both throughout and at the end of your paper. While you will not be graded on the quality of your citations in this assignment, you may receive guidance from your instructor on how to properly cite sources.

You are not required to write intensive paragraphs but do not assume we know what the images or ‘things’ are. Pretend we are aliens who you need to be educated.

    Instructions
In this age of the smartphone, we’re all potential photographers. For this journal, come up with a theme for a photo collection, and try to realize that collection with your own phone photos. Describe the unifying idea in a short paragraph, explaining its importance (you may be as serious as you’d like with this). Then snap photos for the collection (minimum 5), and write a brief title and description for each photo, situating it within the overarching theme you’ve selected. You might also choose to have some concluding paragraph to tie the collection together.
The point here is not to come up with award-winning photos (though that might be a fringe benefit); in fact, you’re not being graded on the quality of the photos at all. The purpose of the exercise is to see how a unifying idea can join different images together into a collection, and to explore how verbal and visual ideas interact. Have fun with this assignment, but take the project seriously for its having the potential to reveal how we understand images within broader contexts.
Once you have this project together, post the photos and text  in the text box, a file upload or on your blog.
This assignment will be a minimum of 350 words, and will be assessed on its formal clarity, the quality of the writing and editing, its degree of engagement with its topic, its creativity/inventiveness/originality of ideas, and the sophistication of thought it expresses.

  • Title: Exploring Activism Through the Humanities: A Comparison of Two Creative Works

For this assignment, you will draft the first two components of Part One of your project. You will identify two creative works associated with your topic. The creative works must be from two different humanities subject areas. These creative works can be selected from the list of works located in the HUM 102 Project Resources document, linked below in Supporting Materials. Alternatively, you may choose to select two creative works not included in the provided list with instructor approval.
Humanities subject areas you may choose from include the following:
Visual art (paintings, photographs, sculpture, architecture, drawing, film)
Performing arts (theater, dance, music, opera)
Literature (novels, poems, scripts for plays, short stories, song lyrics)
Specifically, you must address the following:
Specify which topic you have chosen and the two creative works that you have chosen. Use the two creative works to compare various subject areas of the humanities in relation to your chosen topic. Address the following criteria in Part One:
Describe the two creative works. Feel free to elaborate, but make sure you include these three items:
    Your chosen topic (activism)
The names of the chosen creative works (“This is America” by Childish Gambino and “juxtaposing the black boy and the bullet” by Danez Smith)
Why you chose those creative works
Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic.
How do the different humanities subject areas (visual, literary, performing arts) approach the topic?

  • Title: Unveiling the Voice of Community: A Study of Public Sculpture

One of the traditional functions of sculpture has to do with giving culture a voice that can continue to speak through the passing ages. Public monuments and artworks become an emblem of a people and a time by expressing communal sentiments, distilling the shared aesthetic, and commemorating important individuals and events. Oftentimes, public sculpture is there to convey very specific content, content deemed somehow important to the community.
Go out into your community and find a work of public sculpture. You might find a piece at the local park, or a nearby government building. Do the work of researching the piece to discover its basic details, such as its title, the name of the sculptor, the year it was created/commissioned, and any other relevant information you can unearth.
What is the subject of the sculpture? How does the sculpture capture and express its purpose, if it has an explicit purpose (for example, a sculpture that aims to commemorate a historical event)? What does the sculpture seem to say about the community and what the community deems important? What does it say about the values of the community socially, aesthetically? Is the sculpture full round? Relief? Be sure and comment on the size of the sculpture and how it interacts with its surroundings.
Take photos of the sculpture and its surroundings, and post these along with your response via text box, file upload or blog post (link).
Posting should be 325 words, minimum. This assignment will be assessed on its formal clarity, the quality of the writing and editing, its degree of engagement with its topic, its creativity/inventiveness/originality of ideas, and the sophistication of thought it expresses.
