News stories are written in the Inverted Pyramid format. Stories are organized arranging factual information from most important to least important. This is very different from how we write in an English course. Journalism use what we call the 5Ws or who, what, when, where, and why. But, there is another element that is sometimes included is the elusive “H” or how an event is covered.
For this assignment, you will be examining how a particular event was covered.
You will need to select a local, state, national or international news story to analyze. You can use a physical newsprint story, an online news article, news broadcast video, or social media news source. In fact, you must use and cite 3 different sources. You can analyze how the sources covered a global event (like global warming, economics, women’s rights, social justice, etc.) or you can look at a more targeted event (like changes in South Florida like sea level rise, local elections, school zoning, labor strikes, the environment, etc.). The news event that you choose is up to you. If you do decide on a local focus, you should use different local news outlets.
Select a local, state, national, or international event/news story to analyze.
Find 3 or more media outlets that covered the same event.
Make sure the coverage between the mediums is within 7-10 days.
Think critically about how the different news organizations covered the event. How much space or time did the organization use? Was it a top story in all three? Who did they quote? Did they use the same quotes or information?
Instructions
Write a 500-word paper using the Writing Assignment Organizer analyzing how the three media outlets covered the same event.
Include the elements of who, what, when, and where, why, but focus on the how.
Use and refer to the media literacy skill of analysis (defined above) in your work.
Conduct auxiliary research if necessary to define and/or clarify your points.
Produce an analysis and not just simply summarize the information. How can what you found be utilized by media consumers?
Use 12 pt. Times Roman typeface.
DO NOT ignore or write OVER the word count! Assignments that go over the word count will lose 10% of the final grade. (See rubric below). Word counts will be checked. Please put your word count at the bottom of the paper.
Review Working With Turnitin for submission information, similarity scores, AI detection and how to view your feedback and grades.
Don’t forget to include a reference page at the end of the reaction paper. Visit The Roughwriter’s Guide APA References Page by Dr. Karen Palmer for correct format.
Late assignments will not be accepted, and technical difficulties ARE NOT an acceptable excuse for late work. If you experience technical issues, contact Canvas Technical Support.
It is the policy of this course that plagiarism is NOT allowed. Assignments that have a Turnitin Similarity score higher than 25% will automatically receive a “0”. Make sure to check your similarity score prior to submission.

Analyzing Media Coverage of the 2020 Presidential Election: A Critical Look at the “How”
-
Media Bias in Two Popular News Sites Fox News and CNN are two of the most popular news outlets in America, with millions of viewers tuning in daily. While both claim to provide unbiased news coverage, a closer examination reveals that both sites exhibit a
HAS TO BE EXACTLY TWO PARAGRAPHS, NOTHING MORE THAN TWO SEPARATE PARAGRAPHS!!
You will write a paper that examines two media sites and details what (if any) sort of bias that site exhibits. The paper should be comprised of two paragraphs: the first discusses one outlet and the second paragraph discusses a different outlet.
(I provided a document that has sites that you can use, choose two from that list, do not use any other sites that are not from the list!!)
A successful paper will use media literacy questions in a way that thoughtfully analyzes each site to determine the media outlets’ credibility.
Questions to consider in your paper:
Are the sites credible? Why or why not? What do you see on these sites that makes you think this way? Be specific.
If you think the site shows a bias, explain how and/or why you believe that. If you think the site you chose does not show a bias, explain how and/or why you believe that. Use specific examples.
How do these sites attract readers and do these attributes create bias? Explain how and/or why. Use specific examples.
PLEASE DO NO INDENT
DO NOT USE SECOND PERSON NARRATIVE
USE PROPER CITATIONS
INTORDUCE A PERSON CORRECTLY
PLEASE BE VERY SPECIFIC AND DETAILED
NO GRAMMAR AND SPELLING ERRORS
I provided an example of how the paper should look like, how it should be organized and formatted. -
“Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges: The Inspiring Story of Professor Joe R. Tafoya”
You second assignment will be a feature story—a profile of a campus newsmaker. It could be a professor, a staff administrator, a coach, a student leader, an alum or an intercollegiate student athlete. Start now to make arrangements to interview your source/subject.
The story should also include substantive quotes/comments from a second live source who knows your subject. That adds another dimension to the profile. As per journalistic ethics, do not profile friends or relatives.
Word count of 600 to 650. Use more of a “neck-of the-vase” approach as opposed to inverted pyramid. (We’ll discuss the format in class.) The news narrative or focus formats in Chapter 10 on pages 206-7 of the ebook are good models. Those models call for more color, such as scenes, anecdotes and telling details. The key to good storytelling is “showing” and not just “telling.”
Double space. Use good quotes from your sources and include contact info on them. You can put that at the end or on the back of the printout
Hi there! I wanted to share a profile of an exceptional political science professor(Joe R. Tafoya) with you. This true leader embodies all the qualities necessary for the role. Check out the details below for more information.
Quotes of professor
“ I chose political science versus any other career because you could ask questions the tough questions as a person of color” “ what are your thoughts on critical theory? “ the problem is it has became a modified political football.”
I interviewed a fellow student(Sergio Lopez,)who is also an organizer of the Palestine encampment at DePaul. They confirmed that the professor visited the encampment after class to understand student emotions. The professor showed solidarity by spending time with the students and even ran towards campus during the recent alerts to ensure our safety and rights
INFO ABOUT PROFESSOR.
Yo soy Joe R. Tafoya from East Los Angeles, California where I was raised by a community of immigrants.
My involvement in the student movement for immigrant rights in 2006 led me to be the first in my family to go to college. I earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin where I specialized in American politics, public policy, and research methods.
My research is organized around the dual outcomes of Latino population growth in the United States: Latino political empowerment and anti-immigrant/anti-Latino racism. Within growing Latino communities, opportunities for political engagement and representation in elected office are advancing community interests and improving quality of life. Simultaneously, Latino population growth is alarming conservatives who respond with opposition to immigrants and limiting the right to vote for people of color. My research unites these dual conditions to be able to say more about what it means to be American in an age of social transformation. How might Latinos challenge racist notions like the Great Replacement Theory? My research explores opportunities for Latino political engagement and attitudes towards immigrants by the American public.
My teaching is focused on the dignity of individuals, their relationship to complex institutional designs, and using evidence to identify opportunities for social progress. My course offerings organize my pedagogical approach into two streams: -

FAQs
So what exactly are we doing?
In this assessment, you are expected to present your original journalism research project in the form of a 2,000-word written essay. This means you need to make visible in your essay details of how you designed and conducted your project exploring some aspect of journalism. What did you do? How did you do it? What aspect of journalism did you investigate (professional journalists’ practice; news media articles, broadcast items, podcasts, online presence, features, magazines, vodcasts, etc.; audience responses or audience power)? What journalism studies concept did you select from the required reading* and apply to your data. Please note your data can be previous research – if your research method is “literature review”.
Students apply an approved research method to the analysis of empirical data – please take care to name and briefly explain your method, ideally citing at least one methods source. Your findings should be discussed in the light of relevant journalism studies concepts – introduce your key concept early in the essay and then make sure you discuss your results using a minimum of one journalism studies concept from the required reading.
Your findings should be discussed in the light of recent relevant research on digital journalism – do your findings confirm those in research you have looked at (and discussed in A1)? Do your findings challenge anyone else’s findings?
You must include a discussion of how the principles of research ethics were applied – use the FASS UG research ethics resource to find concepts you can use when stating how you know your project was conducted ethically. Please view the FASS UG research ethics guide here: https://canvas.uts.edu.au/courses/31241/pages/research-integrity-and-ethics-for-fass-coursework-students?module_item_id=1616765
If your project does not involve other people then it’s nil/negligible risk – use concepts from the FASS guide to explain how you know this.
If you’re involving other people please get your tutor’s OK before you survey or interview anyone AND make use of the FASS guide. Even if you are not involving other people, you need to consider your own safety. If your topic is sensitive please check your topic and method with subject coordinator.
You must include a discussion of how the principles of diversity were applied – describe briefly how you have considered at least one kind of diversity in your project. Did you include Indigenous researchers, issues of importance to Indigenous people, or samples from Indigenous media? Did your sample come from more than one part of the community/world? Did you reflect on how your chosen topic might be of significance to different ethnicities, CALD people, LGBTGI-plus people, women, people living with a disability?

https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/support/helps/self-help-resources/types-assignments/literature-reviews
Elements to include: – An outline of your research topic – this must be something to do with journalism, ideally digital journalism. Try to highlight what makes your work original.
– Main question(s) – what are you trying to find out? A strong question includes these elements: the topic area; a key concept from the reading list; a selected data type; a specific community; a specific aspect of journalism.
– Explanation of key journalism studies concepts – use one or two concepts from within a required reading* – use short quotations to explain the concept to demonstrate you have grasped it. Use direct quotations and examples from previous research and cite your sources clearly.
– Discuss recent research and take care to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the work of other scholars to increase the depth of your critical analysis. How does their work help you answer your question? RESOURCE In Canvas: https://canvas.uts.edu.au/courses/31241/pages/critical-evaluation-of-research?module_item_id=1616727 ~
– You can use this tip sheet to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the research you are critiquing. You can include this in an appendix if you like.
– Descriiption of your selected research METHODS – are you using literature review? Content analysis? Source analysis? Framing? Bourdieu? Please use a method you can understand. If you’re not sure about what method to use then choose literature review [SEE this UTS guide here: https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/support/helps/self-help-resources/types-assignments/literature-reviews]. If you’re doing a content/source/frame analysis, then please take care NOT to take on too big a sample. Compare and contrast is your friend – compare two news outlets, two nations, two time points, or representation of two different parts of society, etc.. Please do not try to analyse all the news on a topic – pick key moments, look at two outlets at a particular day or even hour if there is masses of coverage of your topic. For literature reviews, be selective – choose recent papers which are directly about or very close to your topic.
– Explain research ethics in relation to your professional practice as an undergraduate student doing a small research project – use the FASS guide and see the points made above about ethics.
– Explain diversity principles – describe briefly how you have considered at least one kind of diversity in your project. See diversity tips above.
– Include a statement about the value or significance of your project – how can it form your professional practice and that of other journalists?
– A clear list of references using APA referencing style – https://www.lib.uts.edu.au/referencing/apa
Goals include: – demonstrate your capacity to design, conduct and present your original and ethically sound digital journalism research project in an essay
– critique relevant recent digital journalism research
– demonstrate your capacity to explain and apply at least one key digital journalism studies concept
– learn the value of analysing patterns in journalism practice, products, or audiences to improving your own professional practice
– develop your capacity to use ethics and diversity concepts to understand professional practice in research and journalism
– show how you can link your own results back to previous studies

This paper is for my Propoganda and the News Media class. Here are the instructions:
Write a theory paper, ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 words in length, in which you will select one prominent propaganda model that appears most valid to you and justify your choice in the context of journalistic principles.
