  • “Revolutionizing Grocery Retail: The Implementation of Automotive Storage and Retrieval Systems in Kroger’s Fulfillment Centers”

Review Robotic shopping: Inside one of Kroger’s fulfillment centers in Florida Transcript by FOX 35 Orlando.
According to Kroger (2021), in order to introduce proprietary technology solutions centered on artificial intelligence, cutting-edge robotics and automation, and creative solutions to create more seamless and efficient fulfillment, picking, and delivery capabilities to provide customers with anything, anytime, anywhere, and to expand Kroger’s reach and products to new geographies, Kroger and Ocado formed an exclusive partnership in May 2018.
According to Tim Steiner, co-founder and CEO of Ocado Group, “the launch of the first Customer Fulfillment Center marks a historic milestone for grocery retail in the U.S.” Since establishing their relationship in 2018, Ocado and Kroger teams have worked closely together to set the groundwork for the expansion of their cutting-edge fulfillment network across the nation, enabling Kroger to serve consumers whenever and wherever they are in the country.
As a vertically integrated network, Kroger Delivery may cover an area up to 90 miles from the hub and a lot more when spoken sites are linked. Over 1,000 bots operate in these highly automated Customer Fulfillment Centers, flying over enormous 3D grids under the supervision of unlicensed proprietary air traffic control systems. Totes carrying goods and client orders that are ready to be delivered are located on the grid, also known as The Hive.
The bots acquire products from The Hive and present them at pick stations for things to be sorted for distribution, a process driven by algorithms that guarantee items are sensibly packaged as customers’ orders get closer to their delivery dates. Fragile products are, for instance, put on top of bags, which are uniformly weighted, and each order is designed to fit into the fewest number of bags possible, which reduces the usage of plastic.
Items are put onto a temperature-controlled Kroger Delivery van, which has space for up to 20 items after being packaged. Delivery routes are dynamically optimized using strong machine-learning algorithms that take into account things like optimal fuel economy and road conditions.
    Directions:
Explain the concept of an automotive storage and retrieval system. What are the advantages of using this type of technology-based device in a warehouse? Disadvantages? Describe in detail the Kroger Company’s Hive operations.
Your term paper should be at least 3–4 pages long (not including the title and reference page) and highlight the history behind automotive storage and retrieval systems, how Kroger has implemented the concept into their operations, and how the company is delivering goods to the Jacksonville area when they do not have a physical store in our area. Your paper must contain a title and reference page in APA 7 format, be written in Times New Roman 12 font, and be double-spaced. Headings should be used to highlight key areas of your paper.

  • “Protecting Workers: An Overview of OSHA and Workplace Safety”

On December 29, 1970, President Nixon signed into law the Occupational Safety and Health Act, sometimes known as the OSH Act or OSHA (29 U.S.C. 651 to 678), with the intention of enhancing workplace safety and health in both the private sector and the federal government.
OSHA is a division of the U.S. Department of Labor. The Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health serves as OSHA’s administrator. The Secretary of Labor, a member of the President of the United States cabinet, is whom OSHA’s administrator reports to.
Employers are required under the OSH Act to create a workplace that is free of known dangers or, if this is not possible, to take steps to reduce the likelihood of sickness, injury, or death. Additionally, the Act expands employees’ rights and gives the Occupational Safety and Health Administration the authority to take enforcement action against businesses that are not in compliance.
OSHA, or “The Occupational Safety and Health Administration,” is a government organization that develops workplace safety safeguards for employees. OSHA standards occasionally have a poor image, yet they are essential for the safety of our workers. OSHA plays a crucial role in our economy by avoiding occupational illnesses and injuries that might otherwise strain the healthcare system and result in thousands of workers and their families’ losing income.
You are to create a 10–12 slide PowerPoint presentation detailing the following information:
    OSHA’s History and Mission
    OSHA Standards
    Employer Responsibilities
    Worker’s Rights/Responsibilities
    Enforcing Standards
    Reporting Safety Hazards
    Whistleblower Protections
    OHSA Violations and Fines Examples
This presentation should focus on one company that has been fined in the North Florida area. Include in your slide the cause of the fines and how much they were. You can find this information on OSHA’s official website under the “Enforcement” tab or from Enforcement Cases with Initial Penalties of $40,000 or Above.
Your PowerPoint must include a title and reference page. The slide show must automatically progress. Once opened, it should automatically advance to the next slide. The PowerPoint must be presented with an audio recording detailing the information within each slide. List only the information needed on the slide to gain your audience’s attention. Detailed information about each slide should be presented within your audio recording. The presentation should last no shorter than five minutes and no longer than ten minutes. Additionally, presenter notes should be included at the bottom of each slide and mimic the audio recording to meet ADA accommodations. All graphics, pictures, and charts must be cited and listed on the reference page. Review the Occupational Safety and Health Administrationwebsite.

  • Title: “Optimizing Machine Maintenance: Calculating MTBF and Maintenance Costs for a Production Line”

As you have learned from your reading, knowing when a part or system will fail is important for a company. Mean time between failures (MTBF) is the expected time between failures of a part, process, or system and is a common matrix for a firm to use to understand how often a failure will occur.
Assume that you are the manager of a production line and are responsible for keeping the machines running 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. When a machine breaks, it must be repaired and put back onto operation as soon as possible. The problem is that your machines are always breaking down, and you really do not have a good understanding of how often a machine breaks down.
Hint: For this assignment, you will NOT be using the OM software but should use Excel to work the problem.
    Expand AllPanels Collapse AllPanels
    Step 1: Calculate the MTBF
You decide to run a test to determine the mean time between failures. During the test, you start with 75 operational machines on your production line producing widgets. You record breakdowns during a 120-hour observation period in which three of the machines broke down. One at 40 hours into the test, one at 50 hours into the test, and the 3rd failure comes at 90 hours.
Use Excel and the data you collected to calculate the MTBF of your machines. Analyze your results and place them on the spreadsheet.
Continue to Step 2: Calculate the Expected Breakdown Maintenance Costs . . .
Step 2: Calculate the Expected Breakdown Maintenance Costs
After collecting and analyzing the MTBF data, you were surprised at how often your machines really broke down. At your last company, you remember that they had a service firm that would come in and perform preventive maintenance (PM) on your machines and you wonder if this would be an option to reduce breakdowns. However, before you go to your boss to pitch the idea, you want to see if using an outside PM firm would reduce your cost.
So you do some research on the cost and run another study on the number of breakdowns of your machines.
Over the last 12 months, the machines have broken down at the rate indicated in the following table:
Number of Breakdowns Number of Months that Breakdowns Occurred
    0 1
    1 7
    2 4
    3 1
You also do some research on breakdown cost and find that the average cost of a breakdown to your firm is $350. You find a service firm and request a price quote from them. The PM service firm costs $200 per month, but they tell you that you can still expect on average of 2 breakdowns per month even with the PM service.
Use Excel and the data to calculate the expected breakdown maintenance cost versus hiring the PM firm to service your machines.
Analyze your results and indicate which of the options you will recommend to your boss – hire the firm or continue dealing with the breakdowns at the current rate?
