Find a music artist that has a book for you to write about (such as Jay Z or Beyonce)
Write a 4-5 page (1,500 words) paper that incorporates MLA style research and citations, following the guidelines found in the Research Paper Rubric. Successful essays should follow any compelling arguments that use descriptive, informative, comparative, or argumentative points of view. Any diagrams, pictures or others supporting data must be cited and included on a separate page before the work cited page. Do not immerse images in the document text. Do not write about a person, cultural groups, instruments or any other proper subjects. The topic should be an artist, instrument, or style of music that has sources (books) not just web data. You need at least four different types of sources for proper completion of this paper.

A. Gather the curriculum map or curriculum materials for a concept or unit of instruction in the prior, current, and next grade or level in your subject area and then do the following:
1. Describe the curriculum, including the following:
• current grade or level
• concept or unit of instruction
• standards that correspond to the prior grade or level
• standards that correspond to the current grade or level
• standards that correspond to the next grade or level
2. Describe the learning progression across the three grades or levels.
3. Discuss a potential gap or redundancy in knowledge or skills across the three grades or levels.
4. Suggest two improvements to the current grade or level curriculum to better align vertically with the prior or next grade or level curriculum.

B. Discuss how you would work with a team of teachers in your school or district who all teach the same grade or level in a specific subject area to ensure that there is horizontal alignment for the curriculum unit identified in part A1, by doing the following:

For the Final Project, you are going to write an essay on one Jazz artist. You may choose an artist from any era, either an artist we’ve studied this semester or someone not covered in class, including current artists working in the Jazz idiom. Write an essay of at least 750 words discussing at least three representative tracks by the artist (around 250 words per track).
Your essay should focus on your impressions of the music, and include a discussion of any musical characteristics you hear in the tracks that are typical of the historical eras or styles discussed in class. Include time markings. You may also want to include elements of the music or lyrics you connect with personally.
Include a summation that describes what you feel the artist has accomplished either creatively, personally, and/or professionally through the three tracks.
Include footnotes and references as applicable.

A formal writing assignment is required, which for our course will be a concert report of 4-6 pages in length. The concert may be of any genre and may be a recorded event. Students are encouraged to seek out genres with which they are less familiar.  The focal-point of the event must be listening to the music, i.e. not background entertainment.
The concert report could include the following elements:
Genre; what style was heard?
Instrumentation; which instruments were used?
Did different instruments play simultaneously or separately?
Describe tempo, dynamics, and overall mood
Personal reactions to the music (positive or negative, and why)
Biographical information on one (1) composer or performer from the program (please only list elements relevant to a musical career, such as education, concertizing, compositions, etc.)
The report must be typed in a standard font (such as Times New Roman), font size 12 or smaller, with all margins one inch or smaller.  It must be double-spaced, and 4-6 pages in length (not including title page and bibliography, if present).

o Supporting evidence of the composer’s impact. 
• Area Two [20%]: Discussion of the musical time period that you are particularly

Western music as a whole. Again, your conclusion must be supported with
evidence. Please cover the following: 
o Important events and people that shaped and influenced this period. 
o Supporting evidence of this musical time period’s importance to music history
as a whole. 
• Area Three [20%]: Analysis of the aesthetic qualities of a musical piece of your
choice composed by someone you learned about during this course. Please include
the following: (Please pick a piece by Mozart)
o Historical background of the musical selection including time period,
composer biographical information and information about the musical
composition. 
o An analysis of the musical elements (color, melody, harmony, rhythm) of the
musical selection, and how that information is used to evoke feelings and
emotions as you experience (watch and hear) that particular segment (1-2
paragraphs). 
• Area Four [20%]: Discussion of the three (3) ways this course has influenced
and changed the way you listen to or hear music. Please cover the following: 
o Be detailed. 
o Give specific examples and evidence of these changes. 
o Discuss what surprised you about these changes.

Attendance at one live performance of world, classical, chamber, or jazz music is required. The musical performance must be the main focus of the event. A review of 500 words in length is to be submitted. The review should discuss the performance by addressing concepts learned in class and may also include relevant background information on the performers and/or composers.

A 1500-words paper (12 pt. font, double spaced, around five pages) discussing/analyzing a single work of music (a piece, a song, etc). If it is a multi-movement work (for example: a symphony or concerto), only a single movement may be analyzed. This should be an original analysis that includes discussion of: form and structure, texture, melodic harmonic and rhythmic elements, historical perspective and cultural significance of the work, and (if it is a song) the relationship of the text to the music (not an interpretation of the song lyrics). The choice of piece or song you analyze is yours; it can be any style or genre.
