  • Investigating the Impact of Plastic Pollution on Marine Life Introduction: The issue of plastic pollution in our oceans has become a significant problem in the natural sciences. Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment, particularly in the ocean, which has “Building a Comprehensive Reference List: Organizing and Citing Sources with Accuracy and Efficiency”

Select a contemporary issue in the natural sciences to investigate. You may select an issue that was discussed in the course, or you may select your own, with instructor approval. You could consider using your topic and question from Perspectives in the Natural Sciences if they are something you would like to investigate further for this project. After selecting an issue, you will conduct a research investigation, identifying appropriate resources for researching the issue, developing a question related to the issue, and applying principles of natural science to your issue and question. You will submit your planning document as a written report.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
Introduction: In this section, you will discuss your natural science issue and select resources that you can use to research the issue. This will lead you to the development of a research question related to your issue. Specifically, you should:
Describe the issue in the natural sciences that you have selected to investigate. Why is this issue significant?
Describe at least three science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. Your sources must be relevant to your issue and must be of an academic nature appropriate for the issue. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
Based on your review of science resources, develop a specific question related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?
Body: In this section, you will use the natural science resources that you selected to investigate your question, focusing on an appropriate audience and the scientific principles related to the issue. Make sure to cite your sources. Based on your research:
Identify an audience that would be interested in your issue and the question you developed. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message, or who could best help in addressing the issue?
Describe how and why you can tailor your message to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand scientific terminology and principles, or will you need to explain them? How will you communicate effectively with your audience?
Identify the natural science principle(s) that apply to your question and issue. For example, if your issue is global climate change, the principle you might identify is that the sun is the primary source of energy for Earth’s climate system.
Explain how the principle(s) you identified apply to your issue and question. In other words, how are the natural science principle(s) you identified relevant to your question and issue?
Conclusion: In this section, you will conclude your research investigation by discussing future directions for the debate on your issue. Specifically, you should:
Formulate a hypothesis that addresses the question you developed. Make sure your hypothesis is based on your investigation of your question.
Explain how a natural scientist would go about collecting evidence to support or refute the hypothesis you formulated. In other words, what would the next steps be if a natural scientist were to continue researching your hypothesis? Make sure to support your response with the natural science resources that you selected.
Provide a reference list that includes all of the science resources you used to investigate your issue and question. Ensure that your list is formatted according to current APA guidelines (or another format, with instructor permission).
    What to Submit
Your planning document should be 3–5 pages, double spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. You should use current APA guidelines (or another format approved by your instructor) for your citations and reference list.

  • Water Conflict and its Impact on Human Health Title: Water Conflict and its Impact on Human Health: A Global Perspective

Water and wastewater treatment plants in developed countries provide potable water and help prevent discharge of pollutants into waterways. Even areas that are arid or have fewer natural water resources can provide these conveniences through built infrastructure. For example, the Hoover Dam provides water to southwestern United States. Developed countries also have many environmental regulations to protect the environment and human health. Even with regulations, however, environmental accidents of widely varying ranges can still threaten our environment. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 is a great example.
Less developed countries often do not have the necessary resources to provide treatment facilities and/or enforce environmental regulations. In fact, many people do not have easy access to potable water, or they have to watch as their water is contaminated by industry, without the ability to take legal action.
For this discussion, find information about a conflict over a water supply or water quality anywhere in the world and summarize the conflict for your classmates. Discuss your views on how a growing world population affects a resource such as water and how water quality impacts human health. Does this differ in developed versus undeveloped countries? Relate your initial post to this week’s readings and resources. Follow proper citation methods.

  • “The Mineral Impact on Our Daily Lives” The Mineral Impact on Our Daily Lives For this assignment, I chose two household items that I use every day – toothpaste and my smartphone. I was curious to see if these items contain any ingredients that

For this week’s discussion, find two household items that you use every day. These can be items such as toothpaste, makeup, powder, or lotion, or items such as light bulbs and electronics. Look through the ingredient list for any consumables (toothpaste, makeup, lotion, powder, etc.) and see if any minerals are listed. If not, take some time to look up any ingredients that you do not recognize and determine if they came from a mineral source. For example, fluoride comes from fluorite, silica is usually from quartz sand grains, and mica and iron oxides such as hematite are popular in makeup.
For electronic devices, take a little time to investigate your device by performing an internet search such as “iPhone minerals” or “computer minerals.”
Write a discussion post listing your chosen items and the ingredients that come from mineral or rock sources. Discuss the impact of minerals and rocks on your daily life. Without these resources, which of your daily events would have to be altered? Does this make you think differently about rocks and minerals?

  • Sustainable Living Reflections and Calculations “From Guilt to Action: Reflecting on Personal Sustainability and the Power of Collective Action” From Guilt to Action: Reflecting on Personal Sustainability and the Power of Collective Action

Answer and Submit the second 5 entries as a pdf by 5/13/2024.
Week 6: Track your beauty impact – deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, other hair products, soap, shaving cream, lotions, make up… all of these things generally come in single use plastic that isn’t recycled or recyclable. They also often contain toxic ingredients, environmentally destructively sourced ingredients like palm oil, and other problematic components. Pay attention to your products. What is in them? Are they biodegradable? Is the packaging biodegradable? Are there alternatives that have less waste (consider shampoo and conditioner bars, shave bars, and other alternatives that reduce your plastic consumption, here is more info on zero waste beauty brands). Don’t throw out anything you’ve already bought, use it, but consider replacing it when it is done with a more sustainable option. Write a reflection in response to these questions and issues and your thoughts and plans for the future.
Week 7 option 1: If you menstruate, track the impact of your period products – “The Huffington Post calculates that the 70 percent of women who use tampons go through about twenty per menstrual cycle. Women have an average of 456 periods in their life, which translates to 9,120 tampons used. At an average price of seven dollars for a box of 36 tampons, the total amount women spend on tampons is approximately $1,773.33. ” You can save that space in landfills and money in your pocket by switching to reusable menstrual materials. How many disposable products do you use each period? Do that calculation for yourself to see what you would save your whole life by switching. Check out this article for options and more information. Read up on how you can reduce and reflect on your willingness or hesitation. I switched years ago and can’t even imagine buying that crap anymore. 🙂
Week 7 option 2: If you don’t menstruate: track your toilet paper use. Where is your toilet paper from? Can you find out? Are toxins involved in the production? Is it made from trees, bamboo, recycled paper, or something else? How much do you use? How much do most Americans use? Do some googling. I found this remarkable toilet paper calculator, check it out. Are there alternatives? Can you use less each time? Would you consider using a bidet or toilet cloths? Why or why not? TP is one of those things we use thoughtlessly, but has a huge impact. One site estimated that the average American uses 11,155 rolls of toilet paper in a lifetime, the equivalent of ~8 trees. Do you care? Are you interested in reducing that? How?
Week 8: Track your carbon footprint – many things that we do produce excess carbon dioxide. Your carbon footprint is the cumulative assessment of how your activities, from eating to driving, to charging your phone and being warm in the winter, contribute to your overall carbon footprint. Try at least two of the following carbon footprint calculators: WWF, Carbon Footprint, or this Terrpass footprint calculator (or another one of your choice!) to assess your own carbon footprint. Reflect on what you discover, compare and contrast what you liked or didn’t like about them, and what you learned. What are ways that you can reduce your carbon footprint?
Note: it is important to note that the “Carbon Footprint” concept was conceived and popularized by oil companies in an effort to put the attention of individuals to make change, not corporations or fossil fuel companies. Read more here – “Big Oil Coined Carbon Footprints to Blame us for Their Greed – Keep them on the hook”. Collective action addressing the harms of the fossil fuel industry remains critically important.
Week 9: Track your ecological footprint – Use this Ecological Footprint Calculator to estimate your whole Ecological Footprint. This calculator attempts to incorporate more than just your carbon footprint, including your impact on ecosystems more broadly. Try it, share, reflect. How does delving into your personal impact feel? How can we turn feelings of guilt into motivation? What are some ways that you can and will work to reduce your ecological footprint?
Week 10: Reflect on your tracking and journaling this semester. What have you learned? What have you changed? What will you keep working on changing to be more sustainable? How do you feel about collective action, climate activism, and more systematic ways of reaching for change?
