Development of healthcare professional skills requires very active participation and practice. To enhance your care ability, your assignment is to role-play the care skills, strategies and approaches utilized in Gestalt theory.
As in your last two assignments, you need to find a friend, colleague, spouse, or other volunteer (it can be the same person who previously served as your mock client or someone new) to serve as your mock client for the role-play activity. Key to the effectiveness of this activity is your active, engaged participation in the role-play. Before you begin the role-play, be sure you have discussed with your volunteer, mock client the purpose of this mock counseling session. Highlight that the mock client should NOT discuss real, personal challenges, but should represent the persona of someone who is seeking treatment for a substance abuse issue.
The role-play activity requires you (and your mock client) to be spontaneous and candid, yet empathic to each other (do not create or utilize a script; this should be a natural, spontaneous interaction).
