For this module, we will explore ethics in
nursing.
For the discussion, please define very
broadly the concept of ethics as applied to the science of nursing. If
confronted with this situation as a leader, how would you proceed? A staff
nurse approaches you and explains she saw another registered nurse dispense a
vial of Dilaudid (hydromorphone) from the Pyxis and immediately withdraw the
contents into a syringe, cap it, and put it in her pocket. Within the same
minute she grabbed another nurse from the nurses station and explained she
needed to waste the vial of Dilaudid (hydromorphone) because she contaminated
the sterility (dropped an uncapped needle) and already disposed of it down the
sink. The two nurses wasted the drug in the Pyxis (again, the drug is still in
the original nurse’s pocket).
