You used the HR Diagram to find absolute magnitudes of hypothetical main sequence stars of known temperature. You will now perform a simple calculation to find the luminosity (power output) of those stars, in units of solar luminosities. The luminosity of a star in units of solar luminosities is L = 10 ^ (0.4 * (4.83 – M)), where M is the absolute magnitude of the star, and 4.83 is the absolute magnitude of the Sun.
So, let’s say you got M = 5 for the 6000 K star. Just plug into the formula, thus:
L = 10 ^ (0.4 * (4.83 – M))
L = 10 ^ (0.4 * (4.83 – 5))
To get the answer, just type 10 ^ (0.4 *(4.83 – 5)) into Google and it will return 0.855. The 0.855 means that your M = 5 star is 0.855 times as luminous as the Sun. It is less luminous than the Sun.
Do this calculation using the absolute magnitudes you got for stars of temperatures 10000 K, 8000 K, 6000 K and 5000 K.
For each calculation you must show me the numbers plugged into the formula, as I have done. No work, no credit.

Submission (report)
The submission should be in the form of a business report in Word with a well-developed clear discussion derived from the relevant literature. Examples of BI tools or applications to illustrate the findings in the report can be used. Examples could include but are not limited to, Excel, Access, BI tools like SAS, Power BI, etc., diagrams, charts, and tables that might give better emphasis to the discussion in the report.
The report should be targeted at the Board of Directors or Executive Management group and be formatted as a formal business report. The content of the report, including tables and graphs must be appropriate for a Senior Management audience.
There is a large amount of information available on Business Intelligence. Identify key themes described in the course and use those themes as a basis of the analysis. This approach will give you the ability to study the key aspects of the course at a reasonable depth.
While the theoretical underpinnings of the assignment will be primarily drawn from lectures/seminars, tutorials and the textbook, there is an expectation that it will be supplemented with academic and practitioner-based literature.
A limitation of this assignment is that you have only got a short period of time to identify, collect, analyse, and report on your findings. Assessment of your work will take this into account as long as you demonstrate a “reasonable attempt”. Narrow down your focus to an issue/problem that is small enough to allow you to complete your analysis in the remaining weeks while avoiding addressing a trivial issue.
Tables and graphs should be used as appropriate, to communicate findings and recommendations.

Using the HR diagram provided in this module (download the JPG file), find the absolute magnitudes for seven Main Sequence stars of temperatures 25000 K, 10000 K, 8000 K, 6000 K, 5000 K, 4000 K, 3000 K.
As explained in the video, find the Kelvin temperature, for a given star, on the horizontal upper axis, then move down from that point to the Main Sequence, then move right to the vertical absolute magnitude axis and read off the absolute magnitude.
WARNING: Absolute magnitude increases downward. For example, zero is above +2 on the absolute magnitude axis. +5 is BELOW +2. Be very careful of this.
Make a table with two columns. Kelvin temperature on the left and absolute magnitude on the right. Seven stars.
You will use these temperatures and absolute magnitudes in the next project, to find the distances to stars of certain apparent magnitudes that I will assign. Apparent magnitude is a measure of the amount of a star’s light that enters the telescope. The absolute magnitude is a measure of the total power radiated by a star in all directions.
