This paper is a culmination of what you have learned in Units 1-7. For this paper, you will select two different types of counselors that were reviewed in Unit 1. Please select the two you are most drawn for your future career. For each counselor type chosen, please identify the types of clients you would be working with, what approach(es) you would take to serve that client population. 

The purpose of week 7 concentrates on the impact of disaster and trauma-related psychiatric symptoms in special populations, such as women, racial/ethnic minorities, older adults, low socioeconomic status individuals, and those with disabilities. As you have learned thus far in the course, disaster preparedness and recovery depends heavily on material and mental health resources, which can be severely lacking for these populations. Geographic factors also play a role; in rural parts of the country (and in combination with low SES), there may not be sufficient mental health providers on hand immediately following a disaster and long-term follow up care can be difficult to obtain (due to issues with healthcare coverage, transportation, etc).

1). Can you describe disaster preparedness and challenges with regard to special populations?
2). How does a disaster and trauma-related disorders impact special populations?
3). Why do special populations have more barriers to mental health care following a disaster?

WEEK 3 DISCUSSION
PROMPT:
During this week, one of your readings covered the process of meeting with a client for the first time. The reading expanded on the application of Motivational Interviewing and the stages of motivation. For this discussion board, think of examples of your own experience with each of the motivational stages during various times in your life. The examples does not necessarily need to involve substance abuse. Think about times in your life when you have tried to make a change and briefly share what that change was. As you went through the process list one example for each stage: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. What barriers did you experience that made moving from one stage to another difficult? What was helpful to you as you moved from one stage to the next? Based on the reading and your experience what strategies can you employ that would assist a client in his or her move from precontemplation to contemplation?

Of the five underpinnings to common sense child rearing, which do you believe is the most difficult for parents to understand and do in 21st century parenting? Why? Describe two practical strategies for helping parents overcome this one difficult underpinning you described.
