  • “Exploring the Portrayal of Mental Illness in Popular Media: A Critical Analysis of [Movie/TV Show Name]”

    Paper Guidelines
In this course we talk about how psychopathology is portrayed in our society and how this affects the lives of those with mental illnesses. Because most people don’t have expertise in abnormal psychology, public perceptions about psychopathology are strongly influenced by the media, including popular movies and television. Information presented in the media can be sympathetic and enlightening, or can perpetuate the stigma often associated with mental illness. This stigma limits opportunities for individuals with mental illnesses and often prevents them from seeking appropriate help. For this assignment, you will critically evaluate the accuracy of information recently presented in the movies or on TV on some form of psychopathology, and discuss how this presentation might influence public opinion.
Mental Illness in the Movies and on TV”

  • Title: Examining the Relationship between Media Portrayals of Substance Use and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Policy Statement on Children, Adolescents, and Substance Abuse

You’ve made some great points about contraceptive use. Even with many options out there, they don’t always work perfectly because people might not use them correctly or consistently. This often happens because they don’t get enough info on how to use them properly.
Some folks are skeptical about contraceptives, worried about side effects or thinking they might do more harm than good. And it’s true, some birth control methods can cause side effects like nausea, headaches, and weight gain, and very rarely, more serious stuff like blood clots.
Accessibility is another big issue. In some places, people just can’t get contraceptives easil y, which leads to higher pregnancy rates. It’s frustrating because everyone should have the chance to control their reproductive health.
Your solutions make a lot of sense. Making contraceptives more available and educating people about them is key. Plus, using social media to spread the word can really help people understand the benefits and how to use them right.
In 2010, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a policy statement addressing the complex relationships among children, adolescents, substance abuse, and the media. This assignment requires a critical examination of the AAP publication and a critique of a media portrayal of substance use, with links made to the AAP statement and course material. Conclusions about the implications of the media portrayals and the policies recommended by the AAP also should be made. Successful completion of this paper will require work over multiple weeks. A two paragraph summary of the proposed example of substance use portrayal in the media was due by the end of Week 3. The full paper is due at the end of Week 7.
This assignment proceeds in four steps:
    Preparation
Step One: Read the AAP Policy Statement located below. Make some notes for yourself about points of agreement or disagreement you have with the statement and specific findings regarding media depictions of substance use that you want to assess when you write the paper.
