  • Title: The Impact of Social Support on Mental Health: A Summary of “Social Support and Mental Health Among Older Adults in China: Family Support vs. Friend Support” Summary: The article “Social Support and Mental Health Among Older Adults in China:

Post to the Week 8 Discussion Board link above.
Read the abstract of each of the articles from Chapter 8 (Provided)
Select ONE (1) article that interests you the most.
Here is the very important part. Write a summary of the article you selected. You should summarize (a) the introduction, (b) the methods section, and (c) the results. Your summary should accurately reflect what the author(s) thought (the introduction), what they did (the methods section), and what they found (the results). Your summary should be a minimum of 300 words. (10 points)
Following your summary, state why you think the article is important OR why the study you selected is important in terms of the real world. This part is purely your personal opinion, but saying that you simply “like” or “dislike” the study is not acceptable. There is a reason for why you selected that article. Tell me why it is is important. (5 points)

  • “Addressing Addiction in Our Community: Identifying Needs and Taking Action”

    TOPIC:
    • Identify an addiction-related need in your community. How can you, as a citizen of your community, be
part of a solution or become more involved in a current solution? You are encouraged to reach out to
addiction professionals, city council members, Human Service Departments, and substance abuse
programs to gain better insight on what the needs are and if there is anything currently in place.
    • WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?
    • Part 1 of your paper should be an examination of the community you live in and the research you have
done to describe that community. What evidence exists that supports your perception of your
community? (this is where speaking to community partners is important).
    • Part 2 should look at what is either a) already happening in your community, or b) what you think would
be a good activity to start in your community AND how you (or anyone) could be involved in those
    activities.
    • Part 3 should include some research on the activity; what supports the action that an agency is taking, or
the activity that you propose? What evidence would lead you to believe that this is a feasible or
appropriate step to take? You do not have to prove it will work, but you do need to present evidence that
    supports it.

    150 word each post.

  • The Moral Obligation to Assist: Examining Duty-to-Rescue Laws and Their Impact on Society

Do we have a duty to assist?
This discussion is based on Chapter 12: Helping.  There are two questions, very similar.  You may comment on one or both.
    1)  Good Samaritan Laws, including the one in Texas, protect passers-by from civil and criminal prosecution when rendering aid in an emergency situation. Support for that protection is fairly universal. However, at least ten states, including Vermont, Minnesota, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Washington have gone further. In those states, if you are aware of an emergency and DO NOT, at least, “summon assistance,” i.e., call 911, you are guilty of a violation or a misdemeanor. Punishments range from a $100 fine to jail time. These duty-to-rescue or duty-to-assist laws were passed after it was discovered that groups of people had stood and stared at victims in need of help, but did nothing . . . not even call for an ambulance. Some of these people had come back for a second look, this time bringing their friends!
In the summer of 2018, Florida officials ruled they could not charge a group of people who watched, and jeered, as a man drowned. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/5-florida-teens-who-mocked-and-recorded-drowning-man-avoid-charges-jamel-dunn-2018-06-24/
This discussion does NOT involve standard Good Samaritan Laws, but involves the added provision that failure to call 911 or render aid (if able and without endangering yourself) is a punishable offense. Does that go “too far” or would that result in more lives saved?
As an example, here is a summary of Minnesota’s law:
Duty to assist. A person at the scene of an emergency who knows that another person is exposed to or has suffered grave physical harm shall, to the extent that the person can do so without danger or peril to self or others, give reasonable assistance to the exposed person. Reasonable assistance may include obtaining or attempting to obtain aid from law enforcement or medical personnel. A person who violates this subdivision is guilty of a petty misdemeanor.

    Duty to Rescue/Report Statutes

While simply expressing your own opinion is great, relate what you say to the factors that influence helping, mentioned in Chapter 12 and my chapter notes
