  • “Exploring the Impact of Sleep Problems on Thought, Memory, and Emotions: A Literature Review”

    Essay topic
The essay topic is as follows:
How do sleep problems affect thought, memory, and emotions?
We spend approximately one-third of our life asleep and yet rarely think about how important it is to our overall wellbeing. Many restorative and protective processes occur during sleep, so it is not surprising that lack of sleep, or even normal length but poor-quality sleep, can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. Poor concentration, a ‘foggy’ mind, and an inability to control emotions are common consequences of compromised sleep. In chronic cases, where sleep problems occur consistently over long periods of time (e.g. insomnia), there can even be a greater risk of developing a mental illness. Despite knowing about the negative consequences of compromised sleep for many years, we are only just starting to understand some of the mechanisms that might explain these associations.
For this essay, you will review the research literature on how compromised sleep (e.g. sleep deprivation, poor quality sleep) affects thought, memory, and emotions. Given the complexity of this topic, you may need to focus on a few key studies to stay within the word limits. You will need to refer to at least four articles in your essay: the two starting references plus at least two you find independently. You will need to support your argument with the credible source material, which you may have found during your literature search for Assignment 1A: Article analysis.
    Starting references
You must locate and read the following journal articles:
Title: Losing control: Sleep deprivation impairs the suppression of unwanted thoughts
Authors: Marcus Harrington, Jennifer Ashton, Subbulakshmi Sankarasubramanian, Michael Anderson, & Scott Cairney
Publication Details: Clinical Psychological Science, 2021, Vol. 9, pp. 97-113 (Please note that are two versions of this article available through Swinburne LibraryLinks to an external site.. You need to read the one published in the journal Clinical Psychological Science).
Title: Emotional memory processing is influenced by sleep quality
Authors: Daniel Tempesta, Luigi De Gennaro, Vincenzo Natale, & Michele Ferrara
Publication Details: Sleep Medicine, 2015, Vol. 16, pp. 862-870.
Note that these references are not in APA format. You are required to correctly format references in your essay’s reference list.

  • Title: Exploring Emerging Adulthood: Characteristics, Challenges, and Opportunities for Development

    Assignment instructions provided:
CO-1: Explain the lifespan perspective and its assumptions
    about development.
CO-3:  Summarize the major changes that occur in
physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development during each stage of the
    lifespan.
For this assignment, you will explore the concept of
emerging adulthood, a distinct stage of development between adolescence and
adulthood. You will delve into the various aspects that characterize this
period and critically analyze its impact on individuals’ lives. Additionally,
you will examine the challenges and opportunities that arise during emerging
adulthood and discuss how societal factors influence this developmental
    stage.
You will be writing a 3–4-page research paper and supporting
your writing with a minimum of 3 academic sources. Your paper will include the
    following components:
    Introduction
    – define emerging adulthood and provide a brief overview of its
significance to lifespan development. Include the age range and the
factors that contribute to its emergence.
    Discuss
the cognitive, emotional, and social characteristics that distinguish
emerging adulthood from adolescence and adulthood.
    Analyze
the implications of these characteristics on individual’s identity
    formation and decision-making processes.
    Identify
the key developmental tasks and challenges individuals face during
    emerging adulthood
    Highlight
the opportunities for growth, self-discovery, and resilience that emerge
    during this developmental stage.
Formatting your work: Your paper should be created in
a word document, double spaced and free from spelling and grammar errors.
Your paper should include a cover page, 3-4 content pages, and a
separate reference page.  An abstract page is not required for this assignment.
Your paper should be APA formatted using the most current edition.  Your
paper should include citations in the body of your paper and full references at
    the end of your paper.

  • Title: Reducing Gender and Education Bias through Exposure to Non-Traditional Role Models and Educational Paths: A Cognitive Remediation Intervention

For this assignment, I would like you to focus on creating a cognitive remediation with two independent variables (IVs) and one dependent variable (DV) outcome measure (Factorial ANOVA) that is designed to reduce the social bias you were able to demonstrate. —
To receive full credit, you must explain your rationale for developing this intervention. You may NOT use the examples provided here (gender bias or education) for your cognitive test. Please review the example below before you begin. Then, you must use the attached template worksheet file to confirm general format, prepare your One-sentence summary, and develop a relevant Global Significance paragraph.
You can use the example and replace the red writing of the file as your own.

    Here’s an example:
Rationale – I continue to experience attitudes that suggest I should fit the expected mold for a “girl.” I believe exposure to famous individuals who had non-traditional roles can help demonstrate that professional and educational achievements are not linked to gender status.
Hypothesis – A verbal memory test training that pairs popular historical figures (e.g., Florence Nightingale) with their gender based on non-traditional roles and educational background can help reduce significant gender and education bias observed in college students as measured by fewer incorrect gender-biased recall errors on categorical cued recall tests.
Testable prediction – Male, female, and non-binary historical figures are paired with their traditional and non-traditional professional roles (independent variable #1 – e.g., Nurse and Statistician) with expected and non-traditional educational background (independent variable #2 – Italian, mathematics) during a 10-minute visual and verbal memory test presented three days per week for 16 weeks. At the end of the intervention period, the subjects will complete the cognitive test proposed for hypothesis #2. It is expected that the primed exposure to non-traditional roles and educational paths by gender identity will reduce the incorrect recall of male-biased words (e.g., engineering, statistics, blue) when male historical figures (e.g., Thomas Jefferson, John Locke, Benjamin Franklin) are presented compared with female (e.g., Florence Nightingale, Barbara McClintock, Marie Curie) or gender-neutral (e.g., Chien-Shiung Wu, Nira Chamberlain) names.

  • “The Perks and Pitfalls of Depicting Mental Illness in Film: A DSM-5 Analysis of ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’”

Papers must be 10 pages in length before references (i.e., you must include a reference list for anything you reference in your paper like the DSM, the movie/TV show, etc. The paper will be 10 pages not counting the reference list). You will choose one movie (Perks of Being a Wallflower) that depicts a mental illness. In the paper, you will describe Perks of Being a Wallflower and how it depicts the mental illness. You will compare how the mental illness is depicted in the movie/TV show to DSM-5 criteria for that disorder. You must include 2-3 disorders that that character could possibly have (also known as rule outs or differential diagnosis). You will need to describe and discuss these mental illnesses from the DSM-5 and provide a detailed rationale for why a particulate diagnosis was chosen based upon the DSM-5 symptom sets and other information. There are not necessarily right or wrong answers regarding which diagnoses you choose or not choose, but the paper will be graded based on how well the arguments for and against a particular diagnosis is formulated and justified. This paper should also include a critical analysis of how the mental illness is portrayed in the movie/TV show. The paper should also include a discussion of any real-life consequences (positive or negative) of the movie/TV show highlighting that mental illness (for example, might it increase stigma?)
One of your four sources will be the DSM-5.
    Paper will be graded on:
30 points for description of the depicted mental illness in the movie/TV show including the relevant abnormal behavior, thoughts, feelings, etc.
30 points for the DSM-5 information about the mental illness depicted including different diagnoses that could be possible (2-3 different possible diagnoses)
20 points for the comparison the depiction from the movie to the possible DSM-5 criteria for that disorder
20 points for the critical analysis of the depiction from the movie to the possible DSM-5 criteria for that disorder

  • “The Power of Social Pressures: A Personal Experience of Conformity, Obedience, and Compliance”

A Real-Life Example of my Conformity (or Obedience, or Compliance). This paper should describe a real-life example when you conformed (behaved like others because of pressures from them), obeyed (followed others’ instructions or commands, perhaps even when the instructions or commands were immoral), or complied with another’s request (e.g., gave money to a no-good friend or to a questionable door-to-door solicitor). Describe how social pressures operate and how other people sometimes can get you to do things you don’t want to do. Relate your example to social psychological research on conformity, obedience, and/compliance. What are ways to resist unfair pressures to conform, obey, or comply?
