  • Title: Exploring the Wisdom of the Tao Te Ching

Find the link to the Tao Te Ching located in the weekly folder and read seven chapters/stanzas (chapters are usually only a few lines long and they are called something different depending on the translation you read). After reading your seven passages, reflect upon and answer at least three of the following questions (remember to include direct quotes from the primary source):
Pick a piece of advice that you find interesting, helpful, or especially wise.
How did the reading connect to your overall understanding of Taoism?
How did the reading reflect the Tao or help you understand the Tao?
How were the main Daoist virtues reflected in the Tao Te Ching?
How does it compare/contrast to your own principles?
Always avoid posts that simply state that you believe something different. It is expected and common for many people to have different beliefs, so this information will not be pertinent to these posts.

  • “Examination of the Six Core Philosophical Beliefs of Worldview”

APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

  • Title: The Process of Canonization and Evolution of Religious Traditions

Instructions: Choose two of the following prompts and write an essay on each of them.
Each essay should be a minimum of 750 words and a maximum of 1000 words. For all
questions, be sure to use specific examples from the textbook and course notes
NOTE: You may not focus on the same religious tradition in both questions. In other words,
if you choose to compare Christianity and Islam in question 1, then you should not write
about either Christianity or Islam in your second response.
    Questions
    1. Many religions have sacred texts that eventually get organized into a canon. Why is the
process of canonization so important to understand? Choose any two of the religious
traditions that we looked at in the course and compare and contrast their canonization
    processes.
    2. Many New Religious Movements are derived from existing traditions. What themes
unite the new religious movements rooted in Eastern traditions? How do these
concerns compare with the central themes expressed in the new religious movements
    based in the Abrahamic tradition?
    3. Throughout the course, we’ve talked about the difficulties in establishing definitions
    and categories. Explain some of these challenges when talking about “religion” broadly;
why is there no universally agreed-upon definition for religion and how can this be
mitigated? Then, think the terms “new religion,” “sect,” and “cult.” Why is it sometimes
difficult to distinguish between these three terms? Provide one example of each and
explain why you’ve classified it that way.
    4. The different understandings of a possible life after death reflect the cultural values and
historical circumstances out of which they arose. Compare and contrast different
understandings of the afterlife in any two of religious traditions that we examined in
the course in the light of their respective cultural and historical circumstances.
    5. Choose either Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or Indigenous Traditions and discuss the role
of women in this tradition. How has the role and place of women in your chosen
tradition/culture changed over time? What issues regarding gender and sexuality are
currently being considered within the community? Be sure to consider how gender
appears in the sacred texts/stories and whether/how women appear in leadership
    roles.
    6. All religious traditions change over time. Choose either Judaism, Christianity, Islam, or
Indigenous Traditions and compare the ancient practices to modern ones. How are the
ancient and modern practices related? What historical developments are important for
analyzing the transition between the ancient and modern periods in your chosen
    tradition?

  • “The Qualities of a Godly Leader in the Church: Lessons from I Timothy”

Based on this module’s readings, complete the threaded reply for the following two-part questions. Reference the literature and scripture texts in support of your comments, as needed.
In I Timothy, the apostle Paul addressed issues of false teachings and unethical conduct in the church at Ephesus and offered how to assure orthodoxy (correct biblical doctrine) and orthopraxy (right living). In I Timothy 3:1-13, Paul lays out the qualifications for those who would aspire to serve as leaders in a church, and in I Timothy 6:3-10 he describes the misbehavior of false leaders. Review these passages before replying to the DQ prompts. It may be helpful to use a paraphrase version of the bible to check for any nuanced meanings of some words.
*After your reading of the list of leadership qualifications and behaviors to avoid by leaders, describe two traits of a godly leader and why such traits are especially needed in church leaders today. Explain why those two leadership qualifications are essential to church leadership.
*Select, research, and describe a main negative behavior that may present a special challenge for today’s church leadership or for youthful aspiring leaders. State an opposite positive leadership trait that correlates with the negative behavior.  For example, a positive correlate to drunkenness would be having self-control.

  • Title: Understanding Buddhist Teachings through the Buddhist Legends

    Buddhist Legends Primary Source Assignment
Directions: Read the Legends on pages 146-158, “If Thine Eye Offend Thee, Pluck It Out;” and 166-175, “Tissa the Fat” and “Not Hatred For Hatred” from the Buddhist Legends text (you may read the Legend “Why Cry for the Moon” if you’d like, but it is not required.) On the basis of this reading from the Buddhist Legends, answer the questions listed below. You must show how specific passages from the Buddhist Legends support your answers. Since this assignment is in part intended to reward you for reading, you must back up your answers with direct quotes and cited page numbers from the Buddhist Legends text to get full points.  For example, “Quote quote quote quote.” (Legends, 22). Use the chapter on Buddhism in Molloy for help in working out your answers.
The submission must be typed using 12 point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins. Please use MLA, APA or Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date format for all quotations from any sources. For help with Chicago style, see http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/turabian/turabian_citationguide.html
Overview:  The “Buddhist Legends” are engaging fictional stories written by a fourth or fifth century Theravadan Buddhist monk to help readers better understand the Dhammapada.  The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings attributed to the Buddha.  So, you will need to read the Dhammapada text (see inside the folder) to understand what is being “commented” upon in the Buddhist Legends.  For example, in the story “If Thine Eye Offend Thee, Pluck It Out,” the Buddhist Legends tells a story to help us, the reader, understand the saying of the Buddha from the Dhammapada that begins the Legend: “Suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draw it.”  The story of Maha Pala in the Buddhist Legends, then, is meant to help us, the reader, understand what the Buddha was teaching.
    Questions:
From the Legend titled “If Thine Eye Offend Thee, Pluck It Out”
    1. The Elder (also called Maha Pala and Palita) refuses to do an action. What does he refuse to do? (hint: it is related to the “Four Postures,” in Buddhist meditation, which Molloy doesn’t cover-Google it!), This action by the Elder/Maha Pala/Palita has negative and positive consequences. What are these consequences?
    2. Part of what happens to Maha Pala has to do with his past life. Why did Maha Pala (also called the Elder and Palita) become blind (hint: there are two answers!)?
    3. What Buddhist concepts does this Legend teach us?
From the Legend titled “Tissa the Fat”
    4. What does Tissa (called “Tissa the Fat” in the heading of this section) do wrong in his current life? What is his attitude about his wrong-doing?
    5. What did Tissa (also called Devala) do wrong in his past life? Why did he do these things?
    6. What does this Buddhist Legend teach us about the Buddhist way of life?
From the Legend titled “Not Hatred For Hatred”
    7. What was the main thing the barren and fruitful wives did wrong?
    8. Why did the wives commit such wrongs to each other?
    9. What did the Buddha tell the Wives was the answer to their dilemma?
    10. What Buddhist teachings does this Legend reveal?
    11. Which Legend was the most helpful to you in better understanding the teaching of the Buddha? Why?

  • “The Power and Personal Relevance of Justification by Faith”

    Description
The doctrine of justification by faith is for many Christians the heart of the gospel and center of theology. Due to its importance to the church, it is important that we understand and internalize why it has been such good news to so many. Therefore, you are to write a 4-5 page (double-spaced) paper answering two questions: (1) What is the doctrine of justification? (~1.5 pages) (2) What does it mean to me personally? Your job is to summarize the Bible’s teaching on justification (OT and NT) and explain how this does or should affect your everyday life, studies, vocation, relationships, self-image, etc. (~2.5 pages). Be thoughtful and reflective on this second part, as most of your grade is determined by the quality of your personal reflections. Note: This is not a research paper, so don’t worry about secondary sources. However, if you don’t understand terms or ideas and decide to use secondary sources, make sure you cite them properly (using any recognized format [MLA, APA, etc.]).
    Assessment
Score, based on grammar/style, adherence to project requirements, and thoughtfulness/creativity of the project.
    Criteria Ratings

Does not merely rehash implications outlined in class (i.e. freedom from fear, perfectionism, guilt). Develops implications thoroughly or covers a wide range of implications thoughtfully.
This criterion is linked to a learning outcomeDescription of Justification
    10 Pts
Demonstrates excellent knowledge of justification. Makes reference to the aspects of the doctrine, its basis, and how one accesses it, and does so in own words. Makes intelligent use of both OT and NT sources.
This criterion is linked to a learning outcomeGrammar/Style
    10 Pts
Writing is clear. Contains 4 or fewer errors in spelling or grammar
