The visible aspects of a religion are such things as sacred ritual, sacred text, the foundations of cosmogony, rites of passage, sanctified celebrations, and symbolism. In this assignment you will create a PowerPoint in which you pick one religion that you want to delve deeper into with your scholarly research skills.
The choice on what religion to explore is completely up to you – apart from a religion you already practice. You may not explore your own religion/faith commitment, nor one you are already familiar with for our purposes. You need to explore and delve deeper into a religion you are not immersed in – one entirely new to you – this is to demonstrate critical competencies.
Your Presentation is to be creative. The Presentation will contain:
Graphics/Visual Aids
Youtube Video or the like
In-text citations that match all resources
Three article/book resources for support
No crowded text. Text is to be pleasing to the eye
Your presentation must address – at a minimum- the following content:
Title Slide
Introduction and the defining of your religion in your own words.
Identification, examples and discussion of the universal forms of religious expression within your chosen religion and their significance from the perspective of adherents. You do not have to name all religious expressions within each required category contained within your chosen religion. Name one or two with explanations under each category below. This will have one slide for each category with a total of four slides.
Sacred ritual(s)
Sacred text(s)
Celebration(s)
Symbolism(s)
Religions World View
Describe the basic concepts that make up a religious world view. This will have one slide for each category with a total of two slides.
The religions cosmogony doctrine.
The religions salvation doctrine.
Conclude by expressing the importance of studying your religion for others — and for yourself — in relation to the world today.
NOTE:
When the assignment is completed properly you should have a minimum of 12 total slides.
Resources – use at a minimum at least three reliable resources with in-text citations and a resource page to support your analysis. Such sources must be in addition to any encyclopedic or dictionary sources.
Remember all resources must match with in-text citations. You cannot have resources without citations to match – the two must go together, otherwise this is considered plagiarism.

Title: Cultural Competence in End-of-Life Care: A Case Study of Ms. June, a Buddhist Woman from Thailand
Ms. June is a 58-year-old Buddhist woman from Thailand with half a dozen or so of her family now here in the States. Her husband died seven years ago and she moved here after that critical event. She and her husband had been very close through their years of raising four children (40, 38, 35, and 32) on a small farm in Thailand. She, herself, had been raised by a strong mother after her father had died when she was just two years old. Family, farming, and Buddhism were the constants of her life and she depended on each of them to help her manage life well. The differences in context between Thailand and the US for these three constants in her life were dramatic.
Feeling tired for at least a year now, Ms. June tried to help herself feel better by using some over-the-counter pain relievers, sleep aids, and various other things she could afford from her local drug store. She did not want to go to the hospital, in part, because she did not think she could financially afford it, but when her symptoms got worse she went to the emergency room. She was subsequently diagnosed with liver cancer with metastases to other organs. In the hospital for most of the last two months, she was introduced to and received a good deal of help from the palliative care specialists there. Eventually, however, the conflict between family and providers began so her family took her home to use their old, tried, and true methods from their family’s Buddhist traditions. They held a number of ritual ceremonies in the hope of healing her cancer. Ms. June grew worse and her pain increased so much that her family brought her back to the ER. She had dyspnea and an abdomen pain score of 10/10.
In the hospital, Ms. June was intubated and placed on ventilator support. She grew increasingly agitated and restless and at one point even tried to extubate herself. The physician and care team gave Ms. June some morphine to calm her down. This helped stabilize her but the cancer was killing her. The doctor told her family that “She is at the end of her life,” and that “She may die at any moment.” In a quick and loving response, her children and their monk brought a number of things into the ICU to help her in these last hours. The monk used some cords that he wrapped around her bed, then sprinkled some special sort of water, and he appeared to be praying for her. But as he was doing these special Buddhist ministries, the ICU nurse got very uneasy and finally, a unit manager came to Ms. June’s room and told the family and the monk to stop what they were doing. Supposedly, these things were disturbing other patients and had some potential to cause infections. This just made Ms. June’s family angry. They insisted that the ICU stop treating her and let them take her home.
QUESTIONS FOR ABOVE SCENARIO
Consider the following questions during your participation in this discussion:
Is there anything the ICU could do at this point to help make sure Ms. June has the best care possible while she dies?
Is it okay to let a patient like Ms. June go home under these circumstances? It seems unsafe; does the hospital incur any liability for her safety?
What is so disruptive about Buddhist prayers/rituals that it would upset an ICU?
How might a team of healthcare providers with better knowledge of the Buddhist tradition have responded differently to Ms. June’s needs?

The Importance of the Doctrine of Election in Paul’s Theology and its Application to the Church and Individual Believers
Instructions
As Paul addressed various church situations, he illustrated how major doctrines that flow from God’s plan of salvation through Christ Jesus applied to the church and individual believers.
For this paper, you will choose one of the doctrines of Paul listed below to research and reflect on.
Election
Justification
Reconciliation
Adoption
Sanctification
Glorification
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Ecclesiology (the church)
Eschatology (the end times)
Once you have chosen your major doctrine, conduct research and write a four- to five-page paper that answers the following questions:
Define what the doctrine is
How is this doctrine important to Paul’s theology?
What did Paul teach about this doctrine? Provide specific examples.
Paul often uses illustrations to describe his doctrines. What illustrations does Paul use for this doctrine? In what other letters do you see Paul using this illustration for this doctrine? What other illustration, if any, does Paul use to describe this doctrine? Provide specific examples in your answers for each of these questions.
How did Paul apply the truths of this doctrine to the situations faced by the church and individual Christians?
Why is this doctrine important to the Christian faith?
For help with your research, you should consult first with your New Testament and then with sources found on libguides.ccu.edu. Here are some recommended sources:

Exploring the Complexities of Religion: A Reflection on Definitions, Differentiation, Personal Relationships, and Modern Perspectives
Utilizing at least 3 readings respond to the following questions. This should be about one and a half to two pages. This can be done in a traditional 5 paragraph essay or a more creative manner.
Defining Religion: How would you define religion? How has the way you thought about religion changed or been confirmed throughout this semester? What are you basing this definition off of? Make sure to include a reflection on thinkers we read in class, the 3 core principles of religious studies, and some reflection on the 7 dimensions of religion. What voices agree with your definition? What voices challenge it or nuance it?
Differentiating Religion: Do you believe you can truly differentiate between religion and spirituality? If so, what do you take to be the difference? How do you see them impacting each Other? Think about Mallory Nye and the 7 dimensions of religions. This would also be a good place to reflect on lessons from indigenous religions and eastern religions.
Your Relationship to Religion: What is your relationship with religion? Speak to your family’s perspectives, how you were raised, where you land personally, and the religion of those around you that have affected your life. Reflect upon how you plan to either continue your traditions next year or change them.
Spiritual/ Mystical Experiences: What spiritual practice do you find most compelling? This can be something you practice, something you want to practice, or simply a spiritual discipline or practice you admire. Include why you find it compelling and what spiritual goals it accomplished or nourishes. If you practice it, include your own experience with it. If you do not, pay homage to those who do practice it and why they say it benefits them and those around them.
Religion Today: Reflect on the idea that religion is “out-dated.” Where do you think this mindset comes from? Furthermore, reflect on what religions get to set the terms of religious dialogue, such as how we determine good and evil, our conceptions about God, our ethics in the world, etc. How do you think taking on an interfaith or interreligious perspective would change popular conceptions of religion and religious concepts in the world?
I will provide you with the sources you must use.

Exploring Islam: Commentaries on Jesus, Sufism, Orientalism, and Anthropological Definitions 1. The most interesting commentator’s exegesis on Jesus in the Quran was that of Ibn Kathir. His interpretation of Jesus as a
1.The readings for today included excerpts by several commentators (Ibn Kathir, Suyuti, Zuraqi, etc) explaining Jesus in the Quran. Which commentator’s exegesis did you find the most interesting? Why?
2.How do Muslim mystics describe Sufism? What verses & concepts from the Quran do they use to support their arguments in favor of Sufism? (Don’t quote the verses at length; focus on explaining their central ideas)
3.How does Edward Said define Orientalism in his writings that were assigned for today (Edward Said, Orientalism, pp. 1-28)?
4. According to Lukens-Bull where should an anthropological definition of Islam begin? How does he reach this conclusion?
In addition to your response to the prompt, your reading response should also include 4 new important facts/ideas/terms/concepts related to the academic study of the Islam/religion that you learnt from the readings. Look to the readings (not an outside source) for explanations of these facts/ideas/terms/concepts. Provide a brief definition/description of each of these facts/ideas/terms/concepts. The facts/ideas/terms/concepts do not count towards the word count mentioned above. The response should be at least 275 words in length. I strongly recommend keeping the response under 325 words, but you are welcome to write more if you think you need more space to answer the prompt. Please note the exact word count at the end of your response.
Make sure to cite your sources through in-text citation throughout the reading response. For example, “Muhammad was born in 570 AD (Mattson, pp. 52).” Failure to cite sources will impact your grade. A good rule of thumb is to cite the source with page numbers after every couple of sentences/about five times in the reading response. In addition, make sure to cite the source with page numbers after every term/fact/concept. -
