You have been working with a group of engineers and designers in creating a new toaster oven. The product is ready to be marketed, and the company seems to be extremely anxious to begin production. However, when you approached the head of production to start making plans, you are told that your work will be delayed for at least a year. You insisted on beginning production immediately, but the head of production refused to begin before a year has passed. You and the head of production had a very heated exchange, after which you went to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She informed you that she wants you to work out the problems and that the first product needs to roll off the line in six months.

    Documentary Analysis
    film notes
    exploitation of young girls
-trying to appeal directly to the consumer, taking photos of clothes customers and workers are wearing to replicate
-sending them on work trips to china and italy
-the brand is built on the idea of a specific lifestyle more than a brand identity and marketing strategies (marketing is very minimal mainly happening on instagram) the idea of the perfect brandy girl is a blonde skinny california beachy girl
one of the only brands to make the customer feel they need to prove themselves as worthy of the brand
the one size fits all=the universal size being small
    -predatory of young girls
-intentional or not shows the parallels between how we value harm on first world citizens vs third world. objectively the environmental and labour toll of how their product is actually produced is far more harmful overall than the issues within the store but because fast fashion is so out of sight out of mind it seems to still take less precedence in this documentary
-It continued expanding its market, particularly in China. There, the company uses, somehow, even smaller measurements on its “one size fits most” model, perpetuating the same, if not worse, standards on Chinese teenagers. Some are even participating in a viral “BM challenge,” essentially trying to lose enough weight to fit into a tiny skirt from Brandy Melville
-deceptive marketing techniques, made in italy on tags promotes the idea of sustainability however the manufacturing used just as exploitative tactics as a sweatshop
-teenage and young adult employees being required to send full body outfit photos everyday to higher management, stephan would require these photos so he could terminate those who he felt did not subscribe to the look he was going for (whether than be facial features, style, weight, or race) being hired purely based on their appearance when coming into the store, these photos put a heavy pressure on teenage employees to maintain a consistent weight and style leading to the development of eating disorders
while he felt asian employees suited the look of the store he felt black and other poc deterred customers and took away from the brand
2020 closure of brandy melville yorkdale, stephan didn’t like the audience he was receiving at this toronto location stating it was too ghetto, a discrimination lawsuit was filed upon the closure
despite widespread awareness of the issues discussed in this expose documentary brandy melville will never die
cognitive dissonance having to engage with a company
the use of firsthand experiences of employees and young girls
    stephen marsan vs manufacturing
    Documentary Film Analysis
    1.   What is the main conflict/problem in the film?  How do know?  How/was it/can it be resolved?
The issues surrounding the brand of brandy melville are practically endless however the roots seem to all  stem from the exploitive ceo and owner stephan masan. When the store expanded out of italy and  opened its american locations the slim blonde california dream girl brandy girl was born. This was the first time a fast fashion store created an ideal customer, unlike brands like h&m and zara whose entire schtick is proving that they are up to date and with the trends brandy melville became the trend. They created a culture among young girls that made brandy melville a place of idealization, a place where being an employee was a sign of beauty. To keep this idea of a brandy girl owner stephan masan was meticulous through the hiring process making sure to recruit any customer who had the body he thought would suit the company most. When a customer entered the store they were supposed to be welcomed by the epitome of what brandy should look like, in his opinion having poc on the floor did not align with the perfect brandy melville aesthetic.
I think the main issue of this documentary is how consumerism erodes our sense of moral values. As we follow all the atrocious things stephen marsan and the brandy melville company has done, a one size fits all sizing system that caused a whole generation of young girls body image issues, promoting eating disorders, racism within the workplace, antisemitism, unethical manufacturing processes, environmental harm, and sexual harassment, we realize that brandy melville will never truly die, if it could it wouldve already. We can see in the personal testimonies and influencer videos shown throughout the documentary the speakers are often still wearing the brand even as they describe the deep issues with the company. This is because finding products we find appealing  will always trump the conditions where they come from, that is why fast fashion despite being widely known as a highly unethical business model remains as the most common way t

The Task: Select and view a documentary about a topic that you think matters. The documentary must be at least 60 minutes in length and of high production value.  Please seek approval of your selection PRIOR to beginning work.  Take detailed notes with focus on the questions we have been exploring in class (7 questions for analyzing documentaries – see attached).
You are NOT limited to this list of options and the documentary can be in any language.  Please make sure that your choice is grounded in social justice issues and that it lends itself to the questions you need to respond to.
As always, your selection should be a new experience for you (not a doc you have seen or studied before).  There are documentaries on almost every streaming platform – make sure that you have access to yours before you select.  Watch the trailer before you commit.  FYI – True Crime Docs do not lend themselves very well to this task.
Your write up should include: (use notes, and articles about the documentary for insight)

Respond to the questions in proper paragraph format (see exemplar) with depth of thought, analysis and detail.

  • Title: Investigating the Impact of Employee Empowerment on Governance Quality in the Public Sector: A Literature Review

    Research Question
Does employee empowerment improve the governance quality in public sector?
    Instructions
Open FAU Searchwise and find research articles that might help you answer the research question.
What search terms and limits led to the most relevant results?
A primary research article is one in which the author(s) describe a study that they actually conducted. You can tell if an article is a primary research article if the authors use phrases such as “in this study…” or talk about collecting data or number of subjects or participants. Do you think the article you chose is a primary research article? Why or why not?
Can you download the full text of the article in pdf or html?
If not, is the article available through Google Scholar?
Note: For this assignment, you do not need to get the full text of the article. But, if you should ever need an article that is not available via one of the previous options, then you can fill out an interlibrary loan request (this takes time, so should only be used if you have the time and really need the article).
Select one (1) article from the search that:
    Is a primary research article,
Seems relevant to the research question,
    Sounds interesting to you, and
Appears understandable (based on the title and summary/abstract).
Identify the authors, year, article title, journal name, volume and page numbers.
Based on the abstract, explain how this article might add to your understanding of the research topic.
After you post an original response, you will have access to the posts of your classmates.
Responses to your colleagues’ posts are encouraged but not required for this assignment.
Refer to the attached rubric for grading. (Click the Settings icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Discussion assignment.)
Access to the discussion will close at the deadline; no late submissions will be possible.

  • Exploring the Practical Possibilities of Teacher Action Research Introduction: Teacher action research is a methodology that allows educators to engage in systematic and reflective inquiry to improve their teaching practices and student learning outcomes. In this assignment, we will discuss our reactions to

Hey, y’all!  Welcome to another fun day in Research Land.  It’s like Disney Land, but without the lines…
Today, we look at action research.  My hope is that opens some doors and helps you realize some practical possibilities for your future work.  On that end, I ask that you do a few things:
    1.  View the chapter 17 PowerPoint for an overview of the chapter.
    2.  I’ve embedded a video by one of your textbook authors, Dr. Geoffrey Mills.  You know the other one already. 😉 Geoff is a dear friend and wonderful human being and he’s also a top notch expert on action research.  The webinar with Geoff begins round the 7 minute mark.  You may want to listen to this in bits…  A few minutes in the car, a few minutes when you have time… but try to work your way through this because it is as informative of a talk as you’ll find on the subject.  Geoff  will be available soon for a live Q&A (optional of course) and some of you who find yourselves drawn to action research may really benefit from it.
Finally, I’ve posted a link to the Journal of Teacher Action Research.  This is an open source journal that publishes teacher action research.  Just browse around…  Take a look at some articles that interest you.  After that, hop over to the discussion board.  I want us to be able to have some open, honest, no-pressure talks over this chapter because if you’re like most previous classes, many of you will end up going this route in your work.
Thanks, y’all!  Let me know if you have questions!
    ASSIGNMENT:
After viewing all of today’s materials and reading chapter 17, I would like us to have a group conversation of our reactions to this content.  I purposefully just want this week to be a conversation.  You don’t have to respond to all of these prompts, but these are the things I’d like us to discuss this week:
    –  Did you find this methodology a bit liberating if you are currently a classroom teacher?
    –  Do you see the practical implications of this type of work?
    –  Do you have criticisms for this type of methodology?
In other words, what do you think in general about your new knowledge of teacher action research?
My hope is that this methodology, not with out criticism and limits, begins to open your eyes to practical possibilities.  Are you seeing those?
