  • Exploring My Background and Beliefs: Understanding the Impact on Interactions with Others in a Diverse Society

The primary goal of this paper is to enable you to analyze your background and beliefs and how they influence your interaction with others on a personal and professional level. As we live and work in a diverse society, it is important that we become aware of our history, values, possible biases, and prejudices. These socializing influences have contributed to how we think, act, feel, and interact with others who think, act, or feel differently.
The purpose of this paper is to encourage you to clarify your own identities, values and beliefs and to begin to think critically about how they impact your ability to function effectively in a diverse environment. It is a given that confidentiality and non-judgmental attitudes will be maintained by all participants.
This paper should be no less than 5 pages, but no more than 7 pages consisting of:
    Section I: Background
Describe the development of your beliefs and attitudes towards difference (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, abilities). Include how you believe they were shaped by factors such as:
    Ethnic or racial heritage
    Gender and sexual orientation
    Socioeconomic group
    Country/ Region
    Religious beliefs or affiliation
    Socio-political influences
What kind of messages (spoken or unspoken) did you get about people who were similar to you and those who were different from you in those categories?
    Section II: Current Assessment
Describe your current beliefs and attitudes towards difference (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, abilities). Respond to the following:
Have you chosen to retain those of your upbringing or have you modified or replaced them?
Identify and discuss biases you now have regarding groups different from yourself (those distinguished from your ethnic or racial heritage, gender, sexual orientation, abilities, income, religious beliefs or affiliation).
How do those biases influence the ways in which you interact with members of those groups?
Were you particularly interested in or surprised by any of the information/feelings you may have uncovered while completing this assignment?

  • Title: Supporting a Latin American Family with Gender Non-Conforming Child: A Family Therapy Approach Using NASW Code of Ethics and Current Resources

Imagine that you are a licensed clinical social worker with a specialization in family therapy. You have been working with the Perez family, a Latin American family, for 6 months. The family comprises Jose, the 35-year-old father; Suzanne, the 34-year-old mom; Jack, the eldest son; Kale, the middle child; and Marco, the youngest son. The purpose of the therapy centers on the difference in parenting styles expressed by Jose and Suzanne. Jose subscribes to a hands-on and aggressive form of discipline, while Suzanne believes that discussions and consequences for actions (that is, taking away privileges in the home) is a more modern way to parent their three sons. In a recent family session, Kale shared that the pronoun he did not apply to himself. Kale said, “I am gender non-conforming.”
Based on Kale’s announcement in the session, how would you employ the strategies and training recommendations in this week’s readings to help support the Perez family? As you consider your approach, remember that the parenting style of each parent is markedly different.
Please use the NASW code of ethics
