We have to watch the following film https://www.pbs.org/video/frontline-the-interrupters-graphic-language/ After watching the above video, answer the following questions. 1. Define violence as a social problem in the United States and globally. In what ways is the United States a violent nation and is non-violent? Provide supporting evidence from the video and text. 2. Do you believe violence is a matter of deviance, culture, family, race, gender, class, education, or all? Why and why not? Support your position with evidence. 3. Connect different types of violence and the three (3) main sociological perspectives. Provide evidence from the video and text based on the three (3) main sociological perspectives. 4. How does violence impact the various social institutions, health, family, education, employment, criminal justice, and overall community? Provide supporting evidence. 5. What solutions do you propose to address the issue(s) of violence and its effects as a social problem? Which social institution(s) do you propose are best to address violence as a social problem? 6. Referencing one (1) sociological perspective, in what ways do you think it can address violence and remedy its effects as a social problem? 7. What were The Interrupters working to “interrupt”? Do you think their efforts were effective? What do you think was the most effective strategy and your reason why? Provide supporting evidence. 8. Reflecting on your major and/or career pursuits, identify ways community-based violence can be addressed for restoration to a healthy, safe community where inhabitants have a sense of well-being. For question 8 my major is Criminal Justice, nothing specific yet but you can use being a police officer if you want.

Title: Understanding Violence in Media through Inter-Rater Reliability
This discussion includes several steps. Please complete the following steps and write an initial post answering the questions:
Part One:
1. Watch this Bugs Bunny cartoon called “Rabbit Season.” (Rabbit Season Duck, Season Trilogy Again (youtube.com)As you watch this nearly 2 and half minute video, count the number of violent acts that you witness in the video.
2. Make an initial post telling the class about how many acts of violence you counted during the video. After stating your witnessed number, explain what you considered a violent act in the video.
3. Keeping in mind your answers above, provide a definition for violence that should be used when watching the video.
4. The likelihood is that we will have many different numbers for the acts of violence that each of us witnessed during the video. Considering that the likelihood is that we will see different counts in the class, this means that we may have different ideas and definitions for what we consider violent acts. This also means that if we are using different definitions for key elements of a given research question, we would not have high inter-rater reliability. So, what does that inform us about the types of research we have been learning about throughout this class?
Part Two:
1. Using one of the research questions that you created in the Week 2 Discussion or a new research question that you create for the purpose of this week’s discussion, how would you define the various variables that would be used in your research question? How would this definition help researchers maintain high inter-rater reliability when conducting research? -
“Exploring Feminism and Gender: A Comparative Analysis of bell hooks’ ‘Feminism is for Everybody’ and Lisa Wade’s ‘Gender’”
sources – feminism is for everybody by bell hooks
sources- gender by lisa wade
these are the sources see attach document for directions -
“The Impact of Gender Stereotypes and Social Norms on Women’s Participation in Golf: A Sociological Analysis”
he project should include the following:
1. Introduce the research question.
What is the research question?
Why is it an appropriate question for sociological research?
What are some hypotheses what could be tested?
2. Discuss/explain/review the literature.
What research has been done on issues and concepts related to your research question?
What does the existing literature say about the issues and concepts in your research question?
What shortcomings (if any) in the research will be remedied by your research?
How will research add to what other researchers have done?
3. Discus how you will/would collect your data.
Which research method will you use (survey, experiment, interviews, observation, unobtrusive)?
Why did you choose this method?
How would you conduct your research or implement your research method?
What would you observe?
What questions would you ask in your interviews or on your survey?
What type of experiment would you conduct?
4. Discuss your findings/expected findings.
What would you expect to find?
What would be some possible findings?
How would you report your findings?
What did your find?
5. Discuss what directions future research should take.
What research questions should be addressed next based on your research findings?
This project should be submitted in the Project 3 folder in Assignments under the Assessments tab in D2L.
If you would like Dr. Hunt to look at drafts of any of your projects, send them to me as an email attachment at least two working days before the due date
and I will look over them and give you general comments back about how you can improve them. You do not have to have me review them, but I am willing to if
you want me to.
To submit a project, use the Assignment tool under the Assessments tab at the top of the course page in D2L and attach your file in the particular project
folder. However, I will not review any projects that have been submitted in a folder. For a review, you must send them to me as an email attachment with a note
telling me you want me to review it.
Grading Rubrics for each of the Projects can be found under the Assessments tab on our D2L course page. You can also see them if you click on the
submission folder for each of the Projects using the Assignments tool under the Assessments tab.
For my research project, I am using the research question: How do gender
stereotypes and social norms influence women’s participation and
experiences in the sport of golf? My hypothesis is that women who have fewer gender stereotypes associated with golf and feel less pressure from social norms will have higher levels of participation and engagement in golf compared to those who have higher stereotypes and norms. -
Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: A Critical Analysis of Current Research and Strategies for Improvement

“Affirmative Action in Higher Education: Examining the Past, Present, and Future of Diversity in College Admissions” Affirmative Action in Higher Education: Examining the Past, Present, and Future of Diversity in College Admissions L
Affirmative Action Policies have long been a source of hope, controversy, and resentment among the American people. Even as inequality along racial and gender lines persists in universities and workplaces, Americans disagree as to the best way to remediate these problems. Please read the following articles on the recent Supreme Court decision that ended the race-based affirmative action policies which have shaped college admissions processes for decades. You will then write a speech on the issue as if you are presenting it to an academic conference hosted by National University—although you are writing it as a speech you are required to use formal, scholarly language and cite your sources properly.
Specifically, you will focus on the issue of Affirmative Action policies as they apply to college admissions, and the continuing need to address diversity in higher education by examining the policies struck down by the court and reflecting upon alternatives.
Here are the links to the articles:

https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/07/princeton-class-based-affirmative-action-not-progressive
The parameters for your response are as follows:
The response must be between 1150-1250 words. Students that fall short of the required word count will receive a 10% deduction.
You must cite a minimum of 3 scholarly sources—news media articles do not count as scholarly sources, only peer-reviewed journals, books, etc. Provide data from peer reviewed sources on racial and gender inequality in higher education. Be as specific as possible and remember to name your sources directly so that your audience knows that they are high quality and reliable. Do not be afraid to quote sources directly with pertinent statistics or insights.
Review the traditional arguments (including relevant Supreme Court cases over the last half century) made by those who are conventionally in favor affirmative action policies and those against. Be sure to note whether these arguments are consistent with the data made available by scholarly studies on the topic, particularly as they pertain to the issue of college admissions and diversity in higher education. Take a clear position, either in defense of conventional affirmative action policies in higher education or you may argue for the need for a more novel approach to the topic. Be specific in why you are taking your position and defend that position with data from peer-reviewed studies. Remember, you are making an appeal to the public in a town hall and advocating for why your solutions are the best course of action!
You must include a works cited (not part of the word count) at the end.
Your response should include considerable reflection on the pertinent course terms and concepts, failing to reference these consistently throughout will result in a deduction. -
Title: Understanding Social Stratification in Your Community: A Memo to an Elected Official
In Week 3, we studied social stratification and how it influences what goes on in many social interactions among people. Imagine you are a sociologist who works for an elected official who has no background in sociology or a related field. You have been assigned the task of identifying an important example of social stratification that impacts the elected official’s constituency. After you have read the textbook and lectures assigned for this week, draft a 2-4 paragraph memo that accomplishes the following:
Quotes the definition of social stratification from the textbook and/or lectures in correct APA citation.
Identifies at least one example of social stratification in your community.
Identifies one of the sociological explanations of class inequality in the United States and explain why you think it is helpful in understanding the example you discussed in part 2. For example, you could discuss the classical perspectives of Marx and Weber, the symbolic interactionist perspective, the functionalist perspective, or the conflict perspective. -
Title: Analyzing Global Social Problems and Strategies for Improvement
Answer the following 10 questions about global social problems. Answer each question with 3 sentences or more. Given the problem of homelessness, how do structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism analyze this social problem?
Thinking about the United States or choosing a specific country, which proposal do you think would have the greatest impact on improving people’s life chances and reducing poverty?
Should there be reparations for post-colonial nations? How are the economies of post-colonial nations still affected by the legacy of colonialism How much do you think the wealth of some Western European countries (Belgium, Germany, France, England, Holland, etc.) is the result of the exploration of African countries?
Describe the factors in modern life that increase the risk of communicable disease and noncommunicable diseases and why they differ between developing and developed societies.
Thinking about the United States or choosing a specific country, point out possible strategies for improving health, especially for the poorest segment of society.
From a global perspective, how do race, ethnicity, and religion affect people’s life chances?
Consider Chapter 6: From difference to discrimination: Fault lines of race, ethnicity, and religion of the textbook, Global Problems, Global Solutions. How do you interpret the statement made by Agustinus Wibowo, an Indonesian Buddhist? “Having the wrong religion could cost you your life.”
Identify ways in which discrimination throughout the lifespan limits women’s and girls’ life chances.
In the book The Moment of Lift, what caught your attention the most and why?
Compare and contrast causes of voluntary and forced migration. -
Addressing Inequalities in the US Criminal Justice System and Education System: A Reflection on “13th” and “Dan Rather Reports – A National Disgrace” “Overcoming Educational Adversity: Analyzing Deanna’s Journey to College through Social and Cultural Capital”
OPTION 1
Instructions: Write a 2-3 page paper that addresses each of the sections below. In terms of how to structure your paper, I think it might be useful to write a separate paragraph for each part of the question you are addressing. You do not need to number each paragraph but try to answer each question (within the section) in the order they are presented and that should give your paper a nice structure and flow. To complete this assignment you will need to watch the documentary called “13th”. Note: you can access the documentary 13th either on Netflix or on YouTube, here is the YouTube link: https://youtu.be/krfcq5pF8u8
1) Professor Allen (1981) argues that at various points in history, the U.S. criminal justice system has fluctuated between two approaches to handling “criminals”: rehabilitation and punishment. Using our discussions in lecture as a starting point, watch and then reflect back on the documentary 13th and address the question: have the last thirty years of the U.S. criminal justice system been centered around rehabilitation or punishment? Incorporate two examples from the documentary to help support your argument. Be sure to include a time stamp (for example, 23:52) to let the reader know where in the film they are discussing each of your examples.
If you argued that the last thirty years have been centered around punishment, describe one change that you would make to help shift our criminal justice system towards being a system of rehabilitation. If you argued that the last thirty years have been centered around rehabilitation, describe one aspect of the criminal justice system that can be pushed a bit further to become even more focused on rehabilitating people within the system.
Lastly, within lecture we have discussed the concept of racialization or how a group is racialized. First, define racialization for the reader. Then, using the documentary 13th describe one example where we see racialization occurring. Here, as well, be sure to include a time stamp to let the reader know where in the film they are discussing each of your examples. Also, be sure to clearly lay out for the reader what this process of racialization looks like in the example you include. What role (if any) did the media play (newspaper, television or film) in either perpetuating or constructing the racialization of this group?
OPTION 2
Instructions: Write a 2-3 page paper that addresses each section below. In terms of how to structure your paper, I think it might be useful to write a separate paragraph (or two) to answer each section. You do not need to number each paragraph but try to answer each section in the order they are presented and that should give your paper a nice structure and flow. Each paper should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced and 12 pt. font. Your paper is due on Friday (5/3) by 11:59pm. To submit your paper, you will need to upload it to Canvas, under the Assignments link and under the link called “Essay #3”. Note: you can access the documentary “Dan Rather Reports – A National Disgrace” on YouTube, here is the YouTube link: Be sure to answer each of the following: 1) Describe one outside (of the school) barrier or one inside (of the school) barrier that students in East St. Louis, Illinois in the Kozol reading Savage Inequalities encounter and discuss how it is an educational inequality that these students experience. 2) Describe one outside (of the school) barrier or one inside (of the school) barrier that students in Detroit Public Schools encounter and discuss its impact as an educational inequality that these students experience. 2b) How were these educational inequalities that you discussed regarding Detroit Public Schools either similar or different from the inequalities you discussed regarding the students at East St. Louis? 3) During lecture, I introduced the concepts of social capital and cultural capital. In the documentary “A National Disgrace” we are introduced to a student named Deanna who is struggling with her educational experience within the Detroit Public School (DPS) system.Deanna’s educational experience becomes so dire that her previously articulated dreams of going to college seem like they might not materialize (or come into existence). However, in the end we see that Deanna does get accepted and goes off to college. Use one of the forms of capital (social or cultural) to analyze Deanna’s ‘situation’ regarding Deanna’s family, Dan Rather and his production team, and her educational outcome of attending college in the fall. That is, use the concept of social capital or cultural capital to analyze and explain how Deanna went from likely not attending college (and possibly dropping out of school) to applying and being admitted to college in the fall semester. (Hint: pay particularly close attention during the timestamp 1:34:05 – 1:38:30) Good Luck! -
“Exploring a Co-Culture: Understanding and Communicating with a New Community” Exploring the Co-Culture: An Overview of [Studied Group] in the Social Hierarchy and Beyond
Find a co-culture new to you to broaden your co-culture base. PUT us/me/you in that Co-culture.
The subculture project begins with the selection of a subculture or
co-culture in the United States during the current time. In this case,
the dominant culture would be the U.S. culture. This clearly changes as
the country being focused on, e.g. France, England, Iraq, etc, becomes
the dominant culture. Here it is the USA.
The subcultures or co-cultures are the various groups that live in
harmony with the dominant culture, which means that 50% or more of the
dominant culture accepts. can identify, and recognizes the subculture or
co-culture. (Countercultures such as gangs, hate groups cults or the
like or subgroups live outside the value system and are not accepted by
50% or more of the dominant culture.)
NOTE: This project is to focus on a “co-culture”, not a
“counterculture.” Examples of co-cultures could be based on ethnic or
cultural identification, religious beliefs, lifestyle choices, atheism,
ageism, gender, recovery status, e.g. alcoholics, or general belief
systems or group identity found living in harmony within the dominant
culture. Examples from last semester were Foster children, hearing
impaired, returning prisoners, obese co-culture, hindus, autistic,
learning disabled, feminists, and millenials. All identifiable
co-cultures living with their own commonalities.
The co-culture would be one you are likely to encounter in our
immediate geographic region. More co-culture examples might be those
with Learning disabilities like ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, PTSD,
Overweight/Obese(eating disorders) Hinduism,Islam, Judaism,Social
classes that struggle, Ethnic groups like Mexicans, Muslims, LGBTQ+,
Feminists,” Alt-Right” groups (with-in civilized standards ie not hate
groups”, or Millenials, Boomers, Gen Z or I, Black Lives Matter or your
interest in a co-culture you have always wanted to explore.
The key is to narrow your topic so as to have a major focus (drug
recovery, related to teens, women, people in sensitive careers, etc).
Once having chosen and had your topic approved, be sure to include the
following aspects in your paper/project as relevant and then submit it
through the sub-cultural project/paper. This automatically submits your
paper through a plagiarism site, turnitin.com
Your summary must include what you
learned and how this knowledge will work in creating a high level of
understanding/communication when interaction occurs. How doing this
paper can used as an approach to co-cultures in general.

can only be done when this review of literature is done. Do look up what
a research paper entails
For the bibliographies:
Each person must select a minimum of 5 different academic-quality resources.
Each entry must be annotated. This means that you should write a
paragraph explaining why you chose this resource and what particular
information it provided. The credentials of the resource is important.
This a research paper.
Only 2 internet sources may be used. This means academically qualified experts in this co-culture knowledge base.
At least 1 interview or if in-person not available internet sources,
youtube, phone calls, facing other videos. make contact to get feedback
from a co-culture member, needs to be conducted and implemented into
the paper/project. If you are doing an interview then that is
considered one of the 5 sources. Do not indicate the full name of the
person. Have questions ready before the interview. Detail their
