Write a paragraph length answer (100 word+ minimum) for each reading question. Include observations about basic literary elements (character, structure, plot, setting, tone, and theme for prose; theme, structure, rhyme, symbols, images, etc. for poetry). Include specific, parenthetically documented observations and/or short quotes from the unit readings to support each answer. Edit each response for clarity, conciseness, and grammatical correctness before submission.
Avoid using online sources like Wikipedia, SparkNotes, Grade Saver, etc. in place of your own analysis. If you borrow ideas, words, or other information beyond the course text, they must be documented parenthetically and a Works Cited page included.
Do not include the instructor’s prompts in your Reading Questions submission to avoid inflating the Turnitin word count.
Unit 3: On Work, Money, and Values
Franz Kafka (1883-1924), was a German speaking, Czech writer known for his strangely disturbing depictions of the struggles of early twentieth century urban life. Interpret the title of his novella The Metamorphosis. Define the term metamorphosis in your own words. Does the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa happen overnight? How long has it been going on? What does his appearance as a giant insect symbolize in his and his family’s life? What does that have to do with his job?
Describe the metamorphosis experienced by each member of Gregor’s family. Trace their development from the beginning to the end of the story both individually and as a family unit. How do they react to his death? Are they better or worse off when Gregor dies?
    H. Lawrence’s (1885-1930) short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” chronicles the destruction of the child Paul as he attempts unsuccessfully to win his mother’s love. Analyze Hester, Paul’s mother. What motivates her most in life? Why can she not love her children? Why is she resentful of her status in life? What is her understanding of “luck”? Is she “redeemed” by the end of the story, or does she remain in the same moral/spiritual condition?
Relate the personal values of John Milton (1608-74) reflected in the sonnet “When I consider how my light is spent” with those of the characters in D.H. Lawrence in “The Rocking-Horse Winner” or Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis.
In the poem “The Chimney Sweeper” William Blake (1757-1827) imagines a child in early industrial London doomed to a short life of hard labor (This is not the Disney world of the happy, singing chimney sweeps in Mary Poppins). Analyze the innocent optimism of the first-person narrator in the poem and consider who has by implication failed “to do their duty” in the last line.
Willa Cather (1873-1947) was an American author known for her stories about the American West, often in relation to the more “civilized” and artistic cities of the Midwest and East. Marjane Satrapi (b. 1969) is an Iranian born French graphic artist, film director, and author. Describe and critique the values of the main characters in the Willa Cather story “Paul’s Case” and those of the teenager Marji in “Kim Wilde.” What do both want most in life? What is music to them? What dangers do each face in fulfilling their desires? Are they successful?

  • “Analyzing Website Effectiveness: A Critical Review of Four Companies’ Online Presence” “Analyzing Four Different Types of Websites: A Comparative Study”

For this assignment, you are required to research and analyze four companies’ or organizations’ websites. You will complete the Web site analysis worksheet for each site.
For each of the four websites, use the worksheet to keep track of each item listed in the table. Make notes and write a short creative brief – 200 words minimum (per web site analysis) – that summarizes what each site is about, what social media channels feed into the site, and how effective the site is in communicating the organization’s brand or message to its intended audience. Discuss what you think works and does not work in each of your narratives.
Analyzing sites is like looking at a beautiful tapestry and then turning it over to examine the stitching. Be prepared to really examine each organization’s stitching in their “website tapestry.” Good luck with this assignment.
    Website Analysis
Students will analyze Web sites according to elements of design and usability. Students will consider the following in their 200 word narrations.
The audience for the site. Discuss two tasks that a user is likely to complete.
    The usability of the navigation.
The effectiveness of the focal point.
The visual interest of the overall page (typography, color, amount of text/images, etc.).
The appropriateness and accuracy/readability of the text.
The appropriateness of the site to the business. (Is it possible to visit the business?)
    How responsive is the site?
Suggestions to improve the site. 3 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EACH SITE ARE REQUIRED.
Grammar, style, and punctuation all count. Headings are strongly encouraged. The assignment should be written in prose style, may use visual presentation tools such as PowerPoint or Keynote, will be presented in class, and submitted in Canvas.
The objectives of the assignment are for students to:
demonstrate your critical awareness of web compositions by drawing on ideas we have discussed in class
provide new insights on effective Web site design
    How to Analyze a Website
Even companies that do not engage in e-commerce benefit from an effective website since customers often find businesses through Internet searching. Companies may perform a website analysis for numerous reasons. For instance, they may want to know how well their website functions or they may need to examine what competitors do with Web pages. An analysis can even help determine the layout of the site before one is created. A good website analysis explains how well the site supports the company’s goals.
1 Identify the company goals and how they relate to the Web presence. Including this information early in the report helps the executives or stockholders reading the report understand the purpose of the website. For instance, should the site inform customers about the company’s services, persuade them to have a certain attitude about products or ideas, or actually allow direct sales? Write these goals in order of importance in the report.
2 Explain your methodology. If you examined competitors’ sites, discuss how you determined which businesses to look at, such as those located in the same city or the first few found through a Google search. Describe the process you went through at the site or sites. For instance, perhaps you searched for and attempted to buy a toy for a child within a certain age group. Include information about rating criteria in this section.
3 Describe the structure and content of the site or sites. It is important to comment upon how easy it is to find products but also company information such as hours of operation and a contact email. Point out inconsistencies in menus among multiple pages and organizational issues such as links that are difficult to find.
4 Write specific recommendations based upon the findings in the previous section. Refer to the company goals as well as effective elements of other websites if applicable.
5 Create an executive summary, which is a brief explanation of your report’s purpose, findings and recommendations. An executive summary typically explains the report in more detail than an abstract and is usually one or two pages long. It should explain the information without repeating the report verbatim. (Not needed for this assignment, but helpful to know for real-world application)
6 Organize the report by placing the executive summary first, then methods, findings, discussion, recommendations and any appendices such as a scoring matrix. Label each section accordingly. (Not needed for this assignment, but helpful to know for real-world application)
7 Review your language choice. The report should explain ideas succinctly without a lot of technical terms. If you do need to use jargon, define such terms when you first use them.
8 Ask someone to review your report for clarity. The reviewer should not just be an editor looking for comma errors or spelling mistakes but someone willing to express concerns about the way your ideas come across. Revise the report as needYou will analyze four different types of Websites:
-Commercial website (product or service) for Senior Adults
    -Your old High School’s website
    -Entertainment Website for Children
-Website advocating for a single Social Cause
