    4.
    Overview: Argument Research Paper
    In previous assignments, you have read, viewed, researched and discussed materials related to your chosen topic. Now you will develop an 800 plus word argument research paper on your topic. Your essay will include a clear thesis and well developed key ideas with topic sentences and supporting examples. The essay will also follow the conventional organization of the three elements of introduction, body and conclusion.
    Essay Development
    Introduction: A good introduction needs to get your reader interested in your topic, provide relevant background information for that topic and, in a thesis statement, state the main points that support your claim (stance) about the topic. Your thesis should be the last sentence in the introduction paragraph.
    Body: Write a minimum of three support paragraphs. As this is an extended research essay, each main idea may need to be developed into more than one body paragraph. You must also include Counterargument and Refutation within the body of your essay. Your supporting paragraphs must have clear and relevant details, must be well-researched (with good, credible sources and accurate documentation), and must be well-presented and persuasive.
    Conclusion: A good conclusion needs to summarize the argument (reiterate the thesis and summarize the body of the essay) and to explain new understanding.
    Documentation and Formatting
    MLA Style: Refer to the MLA resources in the Module 1 Learning Materials or the 📝 MLA Information Module to review information about MLA formatting, documentation, and other writing resources.
    In-text Citation: Use appropriate MLA formatted in-text citation for evidence from scholarly sources.
    Works Cited: You must cite from at least FIVE sources including at least one perspective that differs from yours. The citations should be on a separate Works Cited page at the end of the essay.
    Purpose
    This assignment requires you to use all of the skills you have been developing to analyze multiple texts, develop and support an argument, follow a process for writing, and use and cite sources properly. Your essay must be focused, must have clear and relevant details, must be well researched (with good, credible sources and accurate documentation), and must be well presented and persuasive. Your argument must also contain a counterargument/refutation.
    Instructions
    1. Return to the Peer Review of your Argument Research Paper rough draft and review the comments of your peers.
    2. Revise and proofread your Argument Research Paper rough draft carefully using the feedback from your peer reviews to create an 800 plus word argument essay.
    3. Your paper must include the following criteria:
    A strong and relevant introduction;
    A persuasive writer’s voice that is both uniquely yours and that is also appropriate for academic writing;
    A strong argument thesis statement;
    Well-argued body paragraphs that contain topic sentences which refer back to the thesis and provide supporting details from your research and your analyses;
    Counterargument/refutation of another perspective in a separate paragraph or within your support paragraphs.
    Five relevant and credible sources incorporated in the development of the argument;
    Strong organizational structure with clear transitional sentences;
    A conclusion that reemphasizes the thesis statement;
    Clearly cited references and quotations using the MLA parenthetical form of citations;
    A Works Cited page using MLA format;
    General MLA guidelines.

    Title: The Debate on the Militarization of Police in the United States

    View the video, Militarization of U.S. Police? [Video] (https://youtu.be/NQAOfNXwAGA) In the past decade or so, we have seen what is known as the “militarization of police.” What this means is that police agencies have been given old military equipment such as armored vehicles, uniforms, and the like to better address violent situations.
    What are your thoughts on this? In your opinion, does the militarization of police better help police address violent situations? Or is it a threat to the public when they respond to protests and the like with this equipment? Why or why not?

    Title: Functional Behavior Assessment of Child’s Challenging Behavior

    step 1 – Choose a child
    Option 1:  Use your own child or a child with whom you have access:
    If you have access to a child, you can use a child or adolescent from 2-16 for this assignment.
    Why you chose this child.
    What behavior you observed (or what behavior you noticed in the child’s sample scenario) and wished to change and why?
    What were the antecedents and consequences that were contributing to the behavior?
    Were there setting events that were influencing the child?
    What is the possible Function of the behavior?
    What was your goal statement and why?
    What preventions did you plan and why?
    What replacement behavior did you plan to teach and why?
    What reinforcements or new responses did you plan to try and why?
    Optional:  If you were able to try any of this plan with the child, you may share the results of your attempts.
    Please explain the most important ideas you learned from this assignment and why you think they were important.  You may also include any challenges you faced while doing this assign
    Describe what happened immediately before the behavior (A- antecedent) and what happened immediately after the behavior (C- Consequence or Maintaining Consequence).  In the behavior column, describe the behavior using factual language.  Use exact quotes if possible, or describe the behavior using factual words to describe actions.
    If you are using your own child, there is an ABC Functional Assessment form on page 288 in our text as well.   Here is the Functional Assessment Interview form with ABC Chart at the bottom:
    Parent Interview form with ABC chart at the bottom of the formDownload Parent Interview form with ABC chart at the bottom of the form
    Setting Event:  If you believe a setting event may be contributing to the child’s behavior, please indicate this in your written summary.
    Function Hypothesis: After you have observed for 3-4 days (or you may use the samples from Pablo, Sashi or Sarah, try to determine the function (purpose) of the behavior).   Take your best guess as to why the child is using this behavior based on the ABCs.  Remember, there is nothing wrong with the function.  Write your best guess in the function box.  If you work with others who also deal with this child, discuss the possible function of the behavior with them to determine if others agree with your hypothesis. (See example from handout in Module 10)
    Possible functions may be: To get something (an object, attention, power, etc), to escape or avoid something (another child, a teacher, an activity, clean up), or to increase or decrease stimulation (movement/ activity level etc).  See more on the chart.
