Assignment Description
Government policy impacts social justice problems. Some policies may create social justice problems just as they attempt to correct them. To successfully address social justice problems, social workers must have the knowledge and skills to locate, access, analyze, and interpret public policy.
Based on your analysis of the social justice problem in the Week 2 assignment, select a current enacted policy that is presently a law to analyze using relevant local, state, or federal policy resources. Your analysis must also address the problem that affects your chosen diverse cultural group (for example, based on race, religion, disabilities, gender orientation, socioeconomic status, or access to services). This will be the policy you analyze for not only this assignment, but the Weeks 6 and 9 assignments as well. Be sure to incorporate constructs that have been covered in this course into your analysis. You will compile all of the assignments you complete throughout the course in Week 9, so as you receive feedback for each assignment, revise your work as necessary.
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following CSWE EPAS competencies and general practices:
CSWE EPAS Competency 5: Engage in policy practice.
C5.GP.A: Use social justice, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive lenses to assess how social welfare policies affect the delivery of and access to social services.

To complete this assignment, select a local, state, or federal policy that targets the form of oppression and discrimination you described in Week 2 (for example, the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), Veterans Millennium Healthcare Act, Affordable Care Act (ACA), Adoption and Safe Families Act, Medicare, Medicaid, Temporary Aid to Needy Families Act, Social Security Act, or a relevant state or local policy, such as state or local affordable housing policies or health and safety policies related to COVID-19).
Then, complete the following:
Describe the purpose of a currently enacted policy that addresses the social justice problem for a chosen population, using scholarly literature for support.
Remember, this policy must be enacted—in other words, it must be passed legislation.
Describe the programs and services provided through the policy, using scholarly literature for support.
What are examples of the programs and services that are being offered as a result of your chosen policy?
Who is the target population for these programs and services?
Describe how the policy connects to the chosen social justice problem, using scholarly literature for support.
Connect the policy to the social justice problem you selected by giving a brief description of the problem. Is it a new problem, something that has recently arisen, or an old problem that has never been resolved?
Describe the historical issues and context that led to the creation of the social problem and policy development.
Include information about the voting outcomes for the policy and the legislative leaders who influenced the policy historically and in the present.
Include the impact these historical features have had on the policy’s implementation.

These are just ideas. Remember: No research is allowed in this essay. You must be able to write the essay from what you already know.
ENGL118: The Classification
Essay, Weeks 2-4
In ENGL118, you will write two full 5-paragraph essays, the Classification
Essay during the first 4 weeks of class, using
tools that help you find your topics and ideas, create a full essay plan, and
draft and revise an essay.
**Important: No research at all is allowed for any of the essays, or stages of them, in
this class. Do not look at the internet or anywhere else; you are the writer
& you will generate every single idea, detail, and example in your mind.
**At the very end of this document, you will find a brief reminder
of a classification essay’s structure and purpose. Please review it as often as
needed for success.
The Classification Essay Steps by Week
Starting in Week 2, you will begin preparing
to write your 5-paragraph Classification Essay.

In Week 2, you will study the
Classification pattern of writing, how to use prewriting, and how to write
without research. You will apply all of this knowledge toward completing a
prewriting/planning worksheet for your Classification Essay and participating
in a writing workshop, receiving and giving peer reviews over that worksheet. you will study how to write the
full draft of your Classification Essay, how a 5-paragraph essay is structured,
how to create flow for your reader with transitions and other tools, and how to
write strong introductions and conclusions and format a simple essay in APA.
Remember: A 5-paragraph Classification essay will take one
topic and break it into three ideas, in a branching structure.
Classification essays are not intended for sharing personal stories, arguing,
or doing anything except naming a topic and explaining three categories of the
topic.
The topic and three categories (three body
paragraphs, eventually) could be a topic + 3 types of the topic, topic + 3
“ways in which,” or the topic + 3 “reasons why.” Your thesis statement for a
classification essay will simply be your topic and 3 main points in sentence
form. Examples of each:

topic + 3 types of the topic = Coffee mugs- three types- novelty, big and
heavy, small with little volume

Thesis = There are three main types of coffee mugs; these
include novelty mugs, big and heavy mugs, and small mugs that do not hold
much.

topic + 3 “ways in which” = Buying groceries- three ways- running to a
convenience or Dollar Store, going to a dedicated grocery store, going to a
superstore that sells everything including groceries

Thesis = There are three ways in which one might go about
purchasing groceries; for example, a quick trip to a convenience or
“dollar”-type store, an actual grocery store that specializes in just
groceries, or a superstore that sells everything, groceries included.

topic + 3 “reasons why” = Why more people are staying home- three
reasons- need family time, enjoy “house hobbies,” safer at home
·
Thesis = People are staying home more for several reasons,
including the need for more family time, the pleasure of working around the
house on projects or hobbies, and the relative safety we feel when we are at
home.
So, for your Classification Essay, you will (in Weeks 2, 3, and 4)
create a structure and thesis like this and will plan, draft, and revise your
essay, paying attention to the required theme announcement for this session. -

The introduction concludes with a thesis statement and statement of the significance of the topic. • The thesis: The thesis demonstrates an assertive stance on a relevant issue that is highly debatable. It is clearly worded, concise and controversy is significant. • Significance of the topic is clearly stated. 4. Literature review demonstrating that the issue is current and debatable through an analysis of the historical context of that issue. The scope and nature of the issue is synthesized in a clear and concise way. Synthesis means that citations with common key points are grouped. Paragraphs draw upon multiple sources to illustrate key points. The discussion is supported by a minimum of five relevant sources of scholarly literature. A balanced view of the issue is presented that demonstrates that the topic is debatable. 5. Philosophical or theoretical underpinnings that inform your position on the issue. The justification of a theory supports the discussion and clearly relates to the topic. It does not need to be a nursing theory. The discussion must be supported by literature. 6. General discussion of topic/issue/construct with references to literature and other sources of evidence to support your argument/thesis statement. Each argument paragraph opens with a clear, concise and thoughtful statement of the main argument that is connected to the thesis. A critical analysis of relevant nursing or health evidence is demonstrated that supports the argument identified in the opening sentence of the paragraph. The discussion is persuasive, flows well, and shows that the thesis is reasonable, coherent and grounded in evidence. A minimum of three different scholarly sources are synthesized to support each argument in the discussion. Each paragraph ends with a succinct summary of how the argument supports the thesis and flows into the next paragraph. Each argument should be discussed under a heading that identifies the main point within that argument. 7. Implications for nursing.
