While the term “research paper” is common, it doesn’t exist as a singular genre. That is, you may be asked to research and work with the resulting texts in a variety of ways across classes and careers. The projects will often look very different from each other in terms of purpose, audience, style, and organization.
With that in mind, I’m not asking you to make a particular type of “research paper” in our final project. Instead, I want you to practice with a variety of rhetorical tools; to develop and revise your writing to effectively represent your own perspectives; and to consider the needs and expectations of a specific & appropriate audience. Aim to make something that people would find useful or interesting. In short: you get to choose a genre that fits your purpose and audience, while allowing you to dive deeply into the topic.

– Immigrants who are lawfully living or authorized to work in the U.S. are eligible for a Social Security number and, in some cases, Social Security benefits. But viral posts make the false claim that “illegal immigrants” can receive Social Security numbers and retirement benefits
– Social Security numbers can also be assigned to “an individual with a valid nonwork reason… For example, they need an SSN because of a federal or state law requiring an SSN to get a benefit or service,” Henriquez said.
– Many of the immigrants arriving at the U.S. southern border in recent years have sought asylum claiming they fear returning to their home countries because of persecution and other dangers.

Compare/contrast the views of two current candidates (perhaps one of them being the candidate you discussed in Essay 2) on 2 or 3 political issues that are important to you. 
Through research from 4 or more sources (including each candidate’s major website and a source that is critical of the candidate), present the individual’s position on each of these issues, as well as their past experience in dealing with it, if applicable. Indicate your view of strengths and weaknesses of the candidates’ views. If there is a factor that is not related to the issues but that you consider extremely important in evaluating a candidate, you need to include it.
