Critical Analysis of Instructor-Approved Films Title: Exploring Miscommunication and Ethnocentrism in Documentary Films: A Critical Analysis

This will be in question-answer (not essay) format. Please double-space
    Instructor-approved films (with links):
    1. “I am Sam” (2001): “A mentally handicapped man fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer the value of love and family.” Available on various streaming platforms, or here: https://www.amazon.com/I-Am-Sam-Sean-Penn/dp/B009BFZWYE . 2. “Sent Away Boys” (2016): What happens to families in the absence of sons? What happens to land in the absence of farmers? What happens to communities in the absence of men? Sent Away Boys weaves together stories of individual ambitions and family biographies from Punjab (India) to chronicle the gradual transformation of agrarian landscape and patriarchal traditions through ongoing transnational migration. English subtitles, FYI (https://www.harjantgill.com/sent-away-boys). 3. “Lady Bird” (2017): “In 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.” A great film. Available on streaming platforms or via this link: https://a24films.com/films/lady-bird . 4. “Chonquelpe Tati Kutral (Let the Fire Never Die)” (2016): Another great one. The indigenous community of El Barco, in Chile, has been relocated almost fifteen years ago after the construction of a huge hydro-dam that flooded their ancestral lands. This film aims at exploring life in the Andes, involving the viewer in the struggles of the subjects who are dealing with the consequences of moving into a new environment. This film is part of a wider anthropological research project about the relation between dwelling and the cosmological indigenous belief in spirits. (https://vimeo.com/220685958). 5. “Moonlight” (2016). Such a powerful, coming of age, film. “The film presents three stages in the life of the main character: his childhood, adolescence, and early adult life. It explores the difficulties he faces with his sexuality and identity, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up.” This can be found on Amazon Prime, Showtime, or here: https://a24films.com/films/moonlight
    6. “The Linguists” (2008): This documentary joins David Harrison and Gregory Anderson, scientists racing to document languages on the verge of extinction. In the rugged landscapes of Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists’ resolve is tested by the very forces stifling languages: institutionalized racism and violent economic unrest. David and Greg’s journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures, knowledge, and communities at stake. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/thelinguists
    7. There are plenty others, and if you have a suggestion that is not on the list above, please message me, in Canvas, for approval. The questions are listed, below. Please use the “submission link” unit under this instruction unit.
    1. What is the overall topic of this film? Theme? Subject? Two to three sentences, on average. 2. Provide a background of the topic of this film. What are the issues this/these individual(s) are currently facing or have faced with regards to this situation? Please use this opportunity to create a comprehensive background of the situation at hand (you may use an outside source to help with context, but please cite it!). Three to five sentences, on average. 3. What forces (government, political, economic, social) are barriers to these individuals in this film? Are the subjects justified (from your perspective) in their calls to action, if there are any? Two to three sentences, on average. 4. What does the influence of cultural traditions, political unrest, and social norms have on the main characters in this film? In other words, do these elements play into the perspective of the theme of the film? Three to five sentences, on average. 5. As we have explored thus far this semester, coming of age in adolescence and early adulthood is foundational for all human groups. After watching this film, how were themes such as angst, frustration, self-discovery, miscommunication (due to ethnocentrism, intergenerational conflict, ignorance, etc) influential in the lives of the individuals highlighted in the documentary? For example, if the film was about a conflict, think about the basis for the conflict (cultural values, norms, morals). Three to five sentences, on average. 6. Integrate one chapter or excerpt, from our book, in relation to the subject matter of the film. For example, in chapter 9 (Love and Sexuality) the author highlights the issues surrounding break-ups (i.e., When Love Goes Bad: Breaking Up). In one of the films I listed, there is a break-up scene that results in a dramatic encounter and emotional turbulence. How does this scene relate to the content your textbook author discusses? Three to five sentences, on average. 6. In terms of the goals of the film maker, do you think there were any biases for or against the main individuals in this film? Do you think this film accurately represents individual protagonist/antagonists? Did you notice anything else that may be problematic in terms of ethics, norms, and/or accuracy? If yes, explain. If no, justify. Two to three sentences, on average. 7. What can a greater audience learn and understand from watching this film? Do any aspects of this film relate to what you have learned in this class? No sentence minimum, however, I will look for critical thought and reflection. 8. Finally, I would like for you to find one article that covers the topic of the film. Not an article ABOUT the film, but rather an article that covers subject matter and/or themes expressed in the film. For example, living as an LGBTQ+ teen in a highly stigmatized community. You only need to provide the web link for the article in your paper OR a PDF copy embedded into your submission. Please provide 2-3 sentences how this article relates to the film of your choice.

“The Impact of Cultural Appropriation in Contemporary Art: A Critical Analysis”

Final text due before class on Friday 10 May 2024 (sessions 28+29). With the aim of being informed about the topic you have chosen for your exhibition, this task consists in writing an individual text (1000-1500 words) of research on a theme.
In addition to this academic research on the topic, some classwork and homework will be set to develop the exhibition project (in groups and/or individually). In this way, by session 30, the project will conclude in class, with a selection of artworks, objects and/or performances to be included in the show.
    1) Purpose
Choose a topic from the given list and plan a piece of research on a particular idea that you want to focus on.
Imagine this text is going to be published in an exhibition catalogue, alongside other essays on different aspects of the same topic. You are the expert in your field, and the research you do is a necessary part of planning the exhibition.
    2) Length
1000 to 1500 words (excluding the reference list and appendix).
The length of the paper is not an indicator of quality. Effective writing is precise, with no redundant, pointless, or self-evident information. Repetitive ideas and waffle/prattle will result in points being deducted. Like solving a Rubik’s cube, enjoy putting words together for a streamlined and smooth result.
    3) Structure
    3.1 Introductory Paragraph
Present the topic of research. If you want, you can write in the first person, and include personal ideas and viewpoints.
    3.2 Body Paragraphs (3 to 5 paragraphs)
Each body paragraph must contain useful information that brings awareness on some aspect of the topic. Typically, each paragraph will reference several sources (with correct in-text citations, in APA7 style). Where needed, begin and end with transitions (guide ideas from one paragraph to the next).
3.3 Conclusion – summarize the research and conclude.
    4) Sources researched
A minimum of 5 credible sources are expected, for example newspapers and art magazines. At least 1 of the sources must be an article from a reputable academic journal. Research on minority cultures may be harder to find, and this added difficulty will be taken into account when evaluating. Sources can be in any language you speak.
Find diverse evidence. Get different perspectives, to present a rounded view.
Incorporate the evidence into the essay with in-text citations that comply with APA 7 guidelines https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/citations.
Reference list on a separate page (in alphabetical order, APA style 7th edition) https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references.
    5) Formatting
Effort to present the document with great attention to detail will be rewarded.
However, design and formatting that obstructs the reading will be penalized.
    6) Appendix: A.I. DISCLAIMER
The use of Artificial Intelligence is not forbidden, but it is not encouraged, on the grounds that it rarely helps to develop creativity and research skills. In all cases, an Appendix must be included, to disclose any use of Chat GPT or any other AI tools, including Grammarly, used during the process of research and writing, whether or not you integrate the output generated by the tool.
At the end of your essay, after the Reference List, include an Appendix titled A.I. DISCLAIMER. On this page, list all the Artificial Intelligence tools you have used. Explain what you used them for, and paste the prompts you inputted, plus how you used the text it generated.
If you didn’t use any AI tools at all, you are still required to include this Appendix, but specify “no AI tools used”.
UPLOAD YOUR SUBMISSION TO TURNITIN before the deadline.

“Taking Action to Prevent Criminal Organizations in Our Community”

Criminal organizations destroy lives and wreak havoc on communities. They are also increasingly difficult to combat, particularly when they extend beyond neighborhoods to regional, national, international, and transnational territories. Therefore, strong efforts to prevent the development and growth of these organizations is crucial. The most effective preventative strategies address psychological and/or sociological root causes of criminal organizations and include the cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, neighborhoods, and even businesses. Some community-based strategies are designed to quell the development of gangs and organized crime groups from the inside out by preventing adolescents from joining these criminal groups. Others seek to open lines of communication between community members and law enforcement so that community members feel comfortable providing information to the police.
In this Discussion, you consider strategies to prevent the creation, development, and growth of criminal organizations in your community.
Post a letter to the editor of your local newspaper that addresses the following:
Explain what law enforcement is or should be doing to prevent new criminal organizations from entering your community.
Recommend an effective strategy to prevent the development and growth of criminal organizations in your community.
If your community has not been exposed to criminal organizations, explain what you would do to prevent them from taking root.

Scholarly resources are preferred, however because this is a semi-formal essay to see how you apply the class concepts in a written context by researching an anthropological topic, you can use information from journals textbooks, specialized books, and web sources. When using web sources use pages from universities, institutions (e.g. Smithsonian) or researchers that have a good knowledge about the topic. Use your judgement or ask me in case of doubt. You can always use sources like Wikipedia to guide you through resources(check the bibliography in Wikipedia articles: usually they are some scholarly resources there) and in your brainstorming process, but do not use it as your main source of information. Visit your library!! Have fun looking for information! Include your references with your paper!!
You can use your favorite citation style as long as you are consistent using it.

Critical Analysis of Chapters 6-8 and Conclusion of Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States “Critical Summary-Report: Analyzing Chapters from [Book Title] by [Author]”

    CHAPTER SUMMARIES GUIDE 4 @ 10 PTS = (40%)
For your summaries, from the book -Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States- write a 4-page summary of  the chapters below.  I DO NOT WANT A DETAILED ACCOUNT OF EVERYTHING THE AUTHOR IS SAYING. This is not an exercise in how well you can repeat every detail. This is an exercise in being able to identify principle, key points in a 20 – 30 page scholarly history paper (which is essentially what each of your assigned readings from the textbook are), critically analyze them, and communicate your findings. I offer here some suggestions. Read the introduction and the conclusion first. These tell you essentially what the author is trying to prove in that chapter. You can make your outline for each chapter’s summary off of these. Then, carefully read the chapters. As you read the chapters, make sure to take notes relevant for each of the things that were mentioned in the introduction or conclusion. Look specifically for topics related to the themes in the course description above. Where there is a footnote or endnote, read the footnote or endnote. In many cases in historical writings, the footnotes/endnotes offer additional critical author’s notes and/or comments on the topic, or tell you the source of the information.
Have you ever heard the saying “consider the source”? It is referring to when someone makes an allegation, you must consider the particular experience, condition or situation or possible ulterior motivations that might lead that person to make those allegations. Someone never exposed to Mexican culture might make certain comments that might not sound offensive to them, but which would be an offensive stereotype to a Mexican. You can put whatever race/ethnicity you choose in place of Mexican. An ex-girlfriend or boyfriend tells the young bride- or groom-to-be nasty things about their fiancé. Who is making those allegations and why? If it is a government report, what led to that government report? Doesn’t the government have enough things to worry about than to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a report? Somehow someone thought it was an important enough undertaking, and pushed for it to get done. WHY? Was there political pressure to look into that issue? From whom? Other politicians? Who was pushing them? Business? Community groups? Labor unions? Human rights groups? Of course, I don’t expect you to actually do all of this research, but I do expect you to ask the questions! Take notes of any interesting findings. After you read the chapter, you should have sufficient notes to write a critical analysis of the chapter. When you sit down to write your summary, the format of the critique should be like this page, you may use MLA format, double-spaced, 1″ margins, and the font should be either 10 – 12 point Times or 10 – 12 point Courier.
    Due this week:
    3.  Read the following chapters and summarize them in ONE 4-page summary:
    CHAPTER 6, CHAPTER 7, CHAPTER 8
FOR EXTRA CREDIT: SUMMARIZE THE CONCLUSION
    CHAPTER SUMMARIES GRADING RUBRIC
    Name (your information)
    Chicano Studies 008 Course Number
    Due Date
Assignment Name (Chapter Summary # 1)
Assignment begins, no more than 8 lines down from where your name is. The paper must be on time, have the proper identifying information as shown above, 1” margins all the way around, have similar size and style font as this (11 point Times New Roman) and meet the minimum length requirements (4 pages) JUST TO BE ACCEPTED. You do not need to include a bibliography, cover page, or table of contents. They will be graded first on this format. You will be given 2 points for each of the following to begin:
Identifying Information and Formatting: Identifying information as shown above [including assignment name, author(s) name(s) and titles of chapters/articles and book to be summarized , and proper 1” margins (2 pts)
Writing Proficiency: Each full page of narrative (2 pts) (max 10 points per assignment)
IF you have met the above requirements, this will give you 10 points to begin with. From that point on I will begin to look carefully at the following criteria in your paper in this order, and deduct the points below if the paper does not meet the following:
Proper Introduction includes at minimum: the title of the book and chapters being summarized, and the name of the author- 1/2 page. (2 pts)
The Body must include: 1) the chapter summaries and 2) a general analysis/critique of each (as shown in the assignment guide above)- 1 page. (4 pts)
Conclusion: synthesis of your opinion of the work- 1/2 page. (2 pts)
Chapter Summary Assignment Outcomes: The student will be able to read and critically analyze a 20-30 page scholarly article/chapter from the required class text and write a 4-page critical summary-report on it in proper MLA format.

Title: The Role of Chemical Equilibrium in Maintaining Homeostasis in the Human Body

    Your paper must include the
following as stated in the grading rubric (grading rubric is attached below):
    1.
Image – Select or draw an image
that is properly referenced in your paper to show that you are able to relate
your image to your content. The selected image must help the reader understand
    the topic better.
    2.
Graph – You may plot a graph
from a data table from your cited source or use a graph already drawn to show
that you are able to interpret the data table or graph. From the graph, what
    generalization can be made?
    3.
    Mathematical Equations/
Calculations- Use relevant mathematical formulas used in chemistry to calculate
an unknown quantity in your paper such as molarity, charge, energy, calories,
frequency, mass, slope, y-intercept etc. In doing so you will demonstrate an
ability to reason quantitatively. Be sure to thoroughly discuss both sides of

“Reflecting on My Narrative Essay Writing Process: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Revisions”

In a piece of at least 500 words, reflect upon the process that you used for writing your Narrative Essay. How did you begin? How did you brainstrom? Where did you make specific revisions? What challenges did you have in writing this essay? What do you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of your work? Use specific examples from your essay to support your assertions regarding your process. This piece should be throughly revised and proofread.
Once you have drafted your reflective essay, consider the follow questions to drive your revision of the piece:
Have I considered my essay with sufficient care so that I understand what qualities in it caused my initial response, and have I studied it with sufficient care so that I have deepened or otherwise changed that response?
Is the title of my essay at least moderately informative?
Is the opening paragraph interesting and, by its end, have I focused on the topic?
Do I state my main point (thesis) soon enough–perhaps even in the title–and do I keep it in view throughout my essay?
Is the organization reasonable? Does each point lead to the next without irrelevancies?
Does each paragraph revolve around a topic idea, a criterion that directly supports my thesis?
Are generalizations or assertions about personal responses supported by illustrative examples, concrete evidence, research, etc.?
Are the sentences concise, clear, and emphatic? Are needless words and inflated language eliminated?
Is the concluding paragraph conclusive without being repetitive?
Are the quotations and paraphrases accurate? Is credit given to sources? Are photocopies of relevant sources included and crucial passages highlighted?
Are long quotations really necessary? Can some be shortened (either by ellipsis or by summarizing them) without loss?
Has the essay been proofread? Are spelling and punctuation correct?
