    “The Historical Accuracy and Inaccuracies of Dances with Wolves” “Dances with Wolves: A Historical Analysis of Native American Representation and Inaccuracies” “Exploring American History through Film” “Exploring American History Through Film: A Selection of War and Political Films from the 1960s to Present”

    This extra credit assignment is to write an essay that is a historical evaluation of a feature film related to American History.
    This should not simply be a summary of a movie or a critical review in which you discuss whether or not it is a good film. Your focus is to tell me specific ways in which this movie has historical value and specific ways in which it is probably inaccurate. To do this well, you should focus on the following questions: (Do NOT write answers to each of these questions in order. These questions are listed in order to clarify what you should be writing about.)
    What does this movie teach you about the historical period?
    How accurately does the movie portray the events/trends of the period?
    What issues/events discussed in class are portrayed in this movie?
    What was your opinion of the movie as a whole? (Did you learn very much?)
    In addition to watching the movie and giving your individual impressions, some extra research will increase your chances of getting the maximum number of points. Here are a couple of ideas:
    Do some careful reading on the period, both in your textbook and, if possible, on the internet. This will help you to evaluate the accuracy of the movie.
    See if you can find movie reviews on the internet in order to determine what historians think of the film. If you read some reviews on-line, make sure that you list the references. (See plagiarism policy.) Do not use ChatGPT or any other AI software to help you write the essay.
    Plagiarism policy
    A person is guilty of plagiarism if at any time he or she copies another writer’s words or uses his or her original idea without giving that person credit. Since there is an enormous amount of information on the internet, it is very tempting for students to simply copy things from a web site and assume that they will never get caught. Please do not attempt to do this. If you use another person’s words, put them in quotation marks and cite your source of information at the end of the paper. If anything that you write is influenced by research that you have done, also list those sources of information at the end of your paper. At many colleges plagiarism can lead to expulsion. In this class, it will result in a grade deduction. (Please keep in mind that your submitted assignment will go through a plagiarism checker before I read it.)

    Title: Transforming Play-Based Activities with Digital Applications: Enhancing Creativity, Drama, Literacy, and Numeracy Skills in Early Childhood Education Title: “Creating Engaging and Developmentally Appropriate Experience Plans for Infants: A Guide for Parents and Caregivers”

    Objective: Using selected apps to transform and redefine traditional play-based activities, enhancing creativity, drama, literacy, and numeracy skills with reference to the Australian Frameworks, semiotic systems, and principles from the Multimodal and Digital Technology.
    Weighting: 60%
    Length: 2500 words (Part A – 1000 words & Part B – 1500 words (experience plan))
    Due: Week 10 Learning outcomes: 2 and 3
    For this assessment you will need to:
    PART A: Research and justify (using Guernsey’s Three C’s and SAMR framework)
    Locate and research four (4) digital applications suitable for children aged 0-5.
    One (1) App will support creativity;
    one (1) App will support drama;
    one (1) App will support language literacy;
    One (1) App will support numeracy.
    Guernsey’s Three C’s Analysis: for each application critique the app’s using Guernsey’s three C’s framework (Content, Context, and the individual Child) to justify your selection.
    SAMR Evaluation: Using the SAMR model, classify each app (as either Substitution (S): The app acts as a direct substitute with no functional change; Augmentation (A): The app is a substitute with functional improvements; Modification (M): The app allows for the redesign of the task; Redefinition (R): The app introduces new tasks that were previously inconceivable) and justify the potential of each application in terms of how it might either enhance or transform learning experiences using credible research.
    PART B: Developing two (2) Play-Based Experiences
    From the applications you’ve identified in Part A, select two (2) apps to develop two (2) experience plans where the digital components of the app intertwine with the physical environment.
    This experience should utilise technology not as a mere addition but as an enabler of richer multimodal interactions (SAMR). Both experience plans should be play-based experience (integrated experience of any learning areas- creativity, drama, language/literacy or numeracy).
    Remember: The apps should not be game-based. Consider apps with immersive elements.
    Example: If the app offers AR features, devise an activity where children use the app to overlay digital objects in real-world spaces, like the outdoor or indoor areas. If the app doesn’t have AR, consider how it might sync with tangible objects or toys. For instance, a music playing app like Specdrums MIX (Sphero Inc., nd) could be paired with physical items that resonate with similar sounds when interacted with, thereby creating a harmonious audio-physical experience.
    Experience plan should include:
    –          Rationale & Goal:  Begin by providing a rationale for the chosen experience. Clearly define the goal or objective you wish to achieve through this learning experience.
    –          Experience Outline: Detail an outline of the experience, providing step-by-step methods of implementation including transitions. Include clear teaching strategies.
    –          Connection to Australian Frameworks and curriculum: discuss how your experience links to relevant outcomes/descriptors from the EYLF and ACARA (foundation years).
    –          Semiotics in Learning: Discuss the various semiotic systems (modes- linguistic, visual, aural, gestural and spatial) of learning that the experience will allow children to explore. Discuss the different ways the experience lets children learn about signs and symbols (semiotic exploration). How do children understand the relationship between different icons, index and symbols through your experience. For example, when a child hears a bee buzzing (index), how do they relate that sound to the image(icon).
    –          Pedagogical Approach: Using the SAMR model, explain whether the digital components of your experience serve to enhance traditional methods or truly transform the learning experience. Use the TPACK framework to discuss the interplay between technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge.
    Experience plan(x2) Presented using canva:
    Utilise Canva to design your two (2) experience plans, ensuring they are visually appealing and easy to comprehend, for parents and caregivers. Within your layout include all areas of the experience plan including the rationale & goal, detailed outline of the experience, its alignment with the Australian Framework (EYLF) and curriculum (ACARA), insights into Semiotics in Learning, and the underlying Pedagogical Approach (TPACK). Title: Addressing Inconsistent Use of ISBAR Communication Tool in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Facility: A Nurse Leader’s Approach

    Read the scenario below about a situation occurring in a cardiac rehabilitation facility. After reading the scenario, write a 500-750-word reflection paper responding to the questions that follow.
    Scenario:
    You are the nurse leader in a cardiac rehabilitation facility. Your unit has several nurses who act as preceptors for nursing students from the local college. You notice that the student nurses seem to lack confidence in using the ISBAR communication tool for handoffs. One day, you overhear a student saying: “I hate doing handoffs; I’m afraid of making a mistake. The nurses all seem to use ISBAR differently.”
    Questions:
    As the nurse leader, what steps would you take to investigate this issue further? Explain what specific information you would try to gather.
    If your investigation revealed that team members are using the ISBAR tool inconsistently, describe at least two actions you would take as the nurse leader to address this.
    Discuss whether or not it would be appropriate for you, as the nurse leader, to provide education on using the ISBAR tool to both the nursing students and your staff. Support your position.
    Submission Guidelines:
    Length: Your paper must be a minimum of 500 words and should not exceed 750 words, not including the title and reference pages.
    Title Page: Include a title page with the title of your paper, your name, the course name and number, your instructor’s name, and the date of submission.
    Introduction: Begin your paper with an introduction that provides a brief overview of the scenario and outlines the main points that will be covered in your paper.
    Body: The body of your paper should be divided into sections with headings that correspond to each of the questions provided. Each section should thoroughly answer the question, supported by evidence from your references and the scenario.
    Conclusion: Conclude your paper with a summary of your findings, reiterating the importance of the issue addressed and suggesting possible future steps or implications.
    References: Include a reference page at the end of your document. At least two references in APA format are required. You may use your textbook as one of the references. Ensure all citations within the text and on the reference page adhere to APA guidelines.

    “Exploring Imagery and Figurative Language: Analyzing Themes in Literary Works” The Power of Figurative Language and Imagery in Conveying the Theme of a Literary Work

    Essay 3—English 1A     Dr. Leiby  Spring 2024
    For Essay 3, you will write a paper that is at least 3-4 typed pages, double-spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font (a minimum of 1,000 words) on ONE of the following writing prompts:
    1    Analyze the imagery and figurative language (such as description, symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc.) in N. Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain, examining how the imagery and figurative language are used to express the values and beliefs of the Kiowa tribe as they relate to one central theme.
    2    Analyze the imagery and figurative language (such as description, symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc.) in Susan Glaspell’s play “Trifles,” examining how the imagery and figurative language are used to make a point or argument about a theme.
    3    Analyze the imagery and figurative language (such as description, symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc.) in both Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird” and the chapter “Graduation” from her autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, examining how the imagery and figurative language are used to make a point or argument about a common theme.
    4    Analyze the similar imagery and figurative language (description, symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc., such as the bird, the cage, singing, and so forth) in both Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird” and Susan Glaspell’s play “Trifles,” examining how the similar imagery and figurative language are used to make a point or argument about a common theme.
    5    Extra Credit Option: Analyze the imagery and figurative language (such as description, symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc.) in both Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird” and her autobiographical novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (including discussion of several chapters, not just “Graduation,” as well as the book’s dedication to her son), examining how the imagery and figurative language are used to make a point or argument about a common theme.
    Thesis
    Your essay should utilize your analysis of the literary text or texts to demonstrate a point that the literary text or texts are making about a theme, such as nature, gender roles, oppression, freedom, self-esteem, solidarity, voice/expression, and so forth. For example, your thesis might be
    •    that the imagery and figurative language in N. Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain express the Kiowa tribe’s appreciation and respect for nature;
    •    or that Susan Glaspell’s play uses imagery and figurative language to demonstrate the negative consequences sexist oppression had on women in the early twentieth century;
    •    or that the “Graduation” chapter from Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and her poem “Caged Bird” utilize imagery and figurative language to show the importance of resisting external and internalized oppression;
    •    or that through their usage of similar imagery and figurative language, Angelou’s poem and Glaspell’s play reveal the damaging effect a lack of freedom has on people’s self-esteem.
    Remember, in your essay you must make a clear point about a theme as you provide specific examples and explanations/interpretations of the literary works’ use of imagery and figurative language, so that your essay is unified and does more than merely list examples.
    Content and Structure
    •    Begin the essay with an introductory paragraph that provides a brief overviewof the author(s) and literary text(s) and theme, and concludes with the thesis statement. For the body paragraphs of the essay, you should not only quote and paraphrase, but set up your examples as well as explain them (use the “sandwich method”). Each body paragraph should begin with a solid topic sentence linked to your thesis, meaning each topic sentence should discuss imagery and/or figurative language and the point made about the theme. End the essay with a conclusion paragraph that reemphasizes the thesis statement and discusses the significance of the pointmade about the theme.
    •    DO NOT begin paragraphs with paraphrases, summaries, or quotations from the text(s). Instead, start with a topic sentence on how figurative language and imagery are used to make a point about the theme, and then provide support for it with sandwiched quotations and paraphrases. Also, DO NOT end paragraphs with quoted material; end with your own words.
    •    Remember that brackets and ellipses can be employed to make quoted material flowwith your prose and that you can use a combination of quotation and paraphrase, even in the same sentence.
    •    You should use at least several examplesof imagery and figurative language in each body paragraph, and be sure to explain to your readers how the imagery and figurative language are used to make the point about the theme you identify in your thesis. Don’t forget to utilize transitional words and phrases to link examples, and make sure that the paragraphs are unified.
    Organization, Audience, and Style
    •    Your essay should be logically organized and include appropriate transitions between paragraphs.
    •    Your audience for this essay is a supportive one made up of your peers who have read the works of literature, but not necessarily from your perspective. Therefore, you will not need to include more than very brief summaries of the literary texts; you will be including mostly interpretation and analysis, not summary.
    •    Use a formal academic style (nocontractions or use of first or second person point of view). (Review the Week 3 Lecture: The College Essay (https://elcamino.instructure.com/courses/39966/pages/week-3-lecture-the-college-essay) under Academic Style.)
    Format
    •    You should use MLA format for the assignment, including correct margins, a heading, and a header. (Review the Week 1 Lecture: MLA Format (https://elcamino.instructure.com/courses/39966/pages/week-1-lecture-mla-format) and the Week 2 Lecture: Citing Your Sources (https://elcamino.instructure.com/courses/39966/pages/week-2-lecture-citing-your-sources)
    .) For in-text parenthetical citations,
    include
    page numbers in parentheses
    (or chapter or section numbers if there are no page numbers) for quotes or paraphrases from

    “Uncovering Meaning through Close Reading and Pattern Recognition in [Literary Text]”

    Close Reading and Pattern Recognition
    Grade Weight: 20% of Overall Course Grade
    Length: 5 pages
    Goals: To establish how small textual details can help us better understand a particular story or novel as a whole. Your argument must be targeted and specific. Generic claims not based on specific textual references will undermine the success of this essay.
    Object of Analysis: Any literary text that we’ve read for class prior to the due date.
    METHOD/STRUCTURE:
    You will structure your paper in there parts:
    PART I: ARGUMENT. In 1-2 paragraphs, identify the pattern or patterns you found and state the conclusions you have drawn. In the case of the latter, you should argue that recognizing this pattern (or these patterns) help us better understand something about the literary work as a whole. This is the first section that will appear in your finished paper, but it actually should be the last section you write.
    PART II: PATTERN IDENTIFICATION. In this section, outline what pattern or patterns you found in the text. By “pattern” I mean any recurrent phenomena you can find in the text: motifs, themes, metaphors or other tropes, settings, character traits, cultural allusions, etc. You must present textual evidence that the trait you have identified recurs more than once in the text. You may quote the text at length, but never assume what you cite obviously illustrates the pattern. Any time you present a piece of evidence, explain why you see it as indicative of that given pattern. This section should be 2 -3 pages long, so you may need to identify a set of related patterns rather than focusing on a single pattern, depending on how much evidence you have to work with.
    PART III: PATTERN ANALYSIS. In this final 2-3-page section, establish what the pattern or patterns you identified mean for our understanding of the text as a whole. You are encouraged–but are not required–to draw upon the “non-literary” readings for the course (e.g. the prefaces, Poe’s literary criticism, Freud’s uncanny, etc.) or upon any other literary terms you already know (e.g. picaresque). Only enlist that vocabulary, however, if it helps you make a larger point about the text. In other words, don’t use those terms just for the sake of using them. You may quote the text again in this section, but you should do so sparingly because you’ve already provided your reader with evidence of the pattern’s existence in the previous section.
    EVALUATIVE CRITERIA:
    Part I (Argument): 4 points. How clear, concise, and forceful is your
    argument?
    Part II (Pattern ID): 8 points. How much direct evidence do you provide, and
    do you prove the evidence demonstrates what you claim it demonstrates?
    Part III (Analysis): 6 points. Are you able establish the pattern or patterns you
    identified in the text can help us better understand the text as a whole. Here you can make aesthetic/literary (genre, form, etc.), cultural (race, class, gender), or political claims.
    Proofreading: 2 points. Is the document clearly written and well
    organized? Is it free of typographical and syntactical errors?
