ESSAY #4 PROMPT
Our recent readings have broadly considered the topic of science vs. pseudoscience and the supernatural. Science deals with empirically observable facts. However, many of life’s most important questions do not deal with empirical observable facts but with the meaning or significance of those facts. Supernatural beliefs evolve from a manifestation or event attributed to force beyond scientific understanding and the laws of nature. Pseudoscience attempts to explain supernatural beliefs through science, but it is false science that masquerades as scientific thinking. It is thinking that appears to be scientific but ignores the basic values and methods of science. We have also inquired into strategies for writing a mediation essay (Rogerian Argument). For your third formal essay write a thesis driven essay that mediates the positions of two groups (specific audiences) holding opposing viewpoints on a specific topic that deals with science vs. supernatural. Your role will be that of a third person, a fairly neutral observer who will make a sincere effort to examine both sides of the topic (research) and demonstrate genuine understanding for both perspectives.
Write a thesis driven essay that explores the factors of argument employed by the believers and the skeptics. Identify a brief compromised position (most likely a question of value) that opens a door for mediation or some form of consensus between the opposing sources. Make sure to include a brief historical overview and at least eight credible sources. At least one of your sources must be a journal article.
LENGTH AND FORMAT In 8-12 pages, double-spaced (12-pt font, 1 inch margins), use MLA to cite your sources. SUGGESTED STRATEGY: Introduce your topic and identify the opposing viewpoints you will be discussing. Provide a brief introduction of your research by identifying brief claims about your topic. Narrow the conflict to at least three issues or points of contention, or factors of argument from which you would like to discuss. Focus your research on those issues and provide a thesis that mediates both positions and summarizes the points on which both sides might agree. Conclude your essay with your point of mediation.
Begin by summarizing the key features of both arguments. Make sure to work with clearly stated positions of the groups in opposition. Provide a clear thesis which refers to your point of mediation.
Provide an historical overview of your topic comprised from MULTIPLE sources.
Introduce and discuss factors of argument used to persuade readers. Identify and clarify any points of contention or consensus. Remember to use topic sentences to introduce issues. You might also consider common rhetorical ploys and logical fallacies used by each side. Develop your own case by addressing each issue with research and analysis as support for your position. Provide a conclusion that identifies and discusses a value, benefit, or consequence associated with your topic. Why is it important to consider the reasons or issues you have discussed? You may want to provide a bit of social commentary about how you envision the opposing groups working together in the future. Or, perhaps discuss the implications of not resolving the dispute and/or the benefits of mutual agreement. CRITERIA ON WHICH YOUR ESSAY WILL BE EVALUATED: Your position/thesis is clear and arguable Your discussion of factors of argument are fully developed with research and analysis Opposing positions are clearly defined in terms of claims and real interests The essay identifies and examines specific areas of agreement and disagreement (factors argument) Supporting evidence is relevant and accurate The essay includes at least eight well-integrated and correctly cited sources Reasoned thinking is convincing and consistent with the evidence presented The essay provides some discussion of a point of consensus based on mutual agreed upon values, implications or consequences. There is consistent and respectful representation of other perspectives Sentence form varies and the essay demonstrates an effective empathetic tone and word choice The essay demonstrates correct use of MLA standards and errors do not distract or impede clarity or understanding of the essay.
