The directions are below:
·     
Your paper must be double-spaced in MLA format,
and 2100 words long, excluding the Works Cited page. You may write 250 words under
or over this limit. Your paper must follow the same MLA format guidelines for
the heading as in your Response Papers.
·     
It must include 10 quotations, including 1-2 quotations from each of
your scholarly sources.
·     
It must include a Works Cited page in MLA format
after the last page of your paper, listing the three scholarly sources that you
quote in your paper, and the Iliad. 
The Works Cited page should be numbered but is not included in your
total word count.
·     
It must include a title reflecting the contents
of your paper, not a label.
MLA format for books on your Works Cited page:
Author last name, first name. Title of book. City of publication: Publisher. Print Date. Print.
Example:
Kindmeuller, Michelle M. Homer’s Hero: Human Excellence
in the Iliad and the Odyssey.

MLA format for articles on your Works Cited page:

your Works Cited page:

Instructions for MLA quotation format for quotations from
the Iliad:
Quotations must cite line numbers, not page numbers. Do
not include the title in your quotation, only the book and lines numbers.

Quote three or fewer lines within the body of
your text, enclosed in quotation marks. 
Include slashes to indicate line breaks. 
Note the placement of the period.
The narrator says: “The goddess
standing behind Peleus’ son caught him by the fair hair, / appearing to him
only, for no man of the others saw her” (1.197-98).

Quote four or more lines in a block quote
indented five spaces, and not enclosed in quotation marks.  Do not use slashes. Double-space the block
quote.   Note the placement of the
period.
Do not include block quotes of
more than six lines.

For all quotations from scholarly sources:

Do not quote more than two lines from any
scholarly source.

Do not include slashes to indicate line breaks.

Do not put quotations into block quotes.

For printed sources, cite author’s last name and
page numbers, e.g., (Kullman. 21-22)

For online sources, cite only author’s last
name, e.g. (Kullman)

Correct MLA format citations, including the
Works Cited page, count as 5% of your grade on this paper.

Essay #3: Analysis of Popular Culture Topic from
Signs of Life, Chpt. 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to write a 5-7 page essay (standard 10 or 12 point font) that examines a topic related to one of the readings from Chpt. 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 in Signs of Life.
Steps:
Choose a selection that interested you, from the readings that have been assigned so far
Choose an essay topic from the “Reading the Signs” section after the reading.
Locate and use 5-7 sources for your essay:
at least TWO sources should be from peer-reviewed academic journals
at least THREE sources should be other types listed on pp. 67-69 of SOL // Note: You don’t have to use the exact sources listed on these pages, but you should choose those KINDS of sources to quote and cite in your paper.)
Using evidence, support your argument in a rational and thoughtful manner. Make sure that your essay is typed and double-spaced, and follows proper MLA format.
Your essay should contain the following elements:
A creative title that tells your reader about your essay
An introductory paragraph that introduces your topic, at least two sources, and concludes with your thesis statement.
Body paragraphs that include support from sources for the claims you have argued/ EACH
Body paragraph should quote and cite a source at least once.
Textual evidence: At least 5 Sources which are quoted and cited in your paper
Body paragraphs that offer main points related to your thesis
Topic and concluding sentences that express YOUR main points and relate back to your thesis statement (avoid quotations in topic and concluding sentences)
Clear transitions between main points
An articulate conclusion that offers a new reflection on the thesis
Clear MLA parenthetical citation and a works cited page
Your final essay should be as error-free as possible.

The research proposal provides a space for you to share the reasons why you want to study your chosen topic and helps you determine the parameters of your future writing project, including your research questions), rationale, summary, predictions, list of reviewed sources, and a strategy for next steps. This assignment serves two purposes: it provides a blueprint-or a working plan-for your future essay, and it helps you to establish topical boundaries, as you begin to narrow your research focus.
Please copy and paste this organizer into a Word document and fill out each row on the right with information specific to your topic and research project. The requirements for the content of each section are outlined in the Research Proposal Prompt.
You should still plan to use formal MLA style for this assignment, including a MLA title page and header.
