Exploring a Natural Science Topic: Investigating the Impact of Bee Decline on the Environment and Society “The Impact of Personal Beliefs, Major Developments, and Scientific Literacy on Understanding and Studying Natural Sciences”
Course Outcomes
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
Determine fundamental approaches to scientific research in addressing questions related to the natural world
Develop questions about fundamental aspects of the natural world that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using empirical evidence
Investigate questions about fundamental aspects of the natural world that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using empirical evidence
Articulate the value of the natural sciences for their impact on contemporary issues
Overview
This course will introduce you to fundamental ideas in the natural sciences and how scientists study phenomena in the natural world. Having a well-rounded understanding of scientific research is much more than just an academic pursuit. We encounter natural science every day. Consider news headlines about vaccine development, debate about climate change, privatizing space exploration, how bees affect our environment, and whether intestinal health impacts mental health. Think about the conversations you’ve had with friends and family about weather, gardening, cancer, or black holes. These are all natural science topics!
Being scientifically literate helps you to better understand the world, solve problems, and make informed judgments. It also allows you to evaluate the credibility of claims you hear in the news or from members of your community. A society that understands how science works thinks critically about information, is empowered to make better decisions, and is less likely to be misled by those who distort evidence to promote their own agenda.
In this project, you will use a recent news article to identify a natural science topic that you are curious about. You will explore how research is conducted about the topic, scientific developments that have affected it, and its societal significance. This will provide you with a deeper understanding of scientific research and the fundamental aspects of the natural world.
Directions
Complete this project by addressing the criteria below. You will complete parts of the project in each module and receive instructor feedback. Your final submission will be revisions of the work you do throughout the course. Be sure to incorporate instructor feedback from each assignment along the way. Read these guidelines and rubric criteria closely, and reach out to your instructor if you have any questions.
Part 1: Natural Science Topic Exploration
In this section, you will explore a natural science topic by selecting and analyzing a current news story. You will also reflect on your existing knowledge about the topic. Then, you will identify how research on the topic was conducted as described in the news story.
Describe the main idea discussed in your chosen news story.
In other words, what is the key concept or thesis being examined in the news story?
Explain your prior and desired knowledge regarding the main idea in your news story.
What do you already know about the topic? Do you have personal experience with the topic? What else would you like to know about it?
Identify a scientific approach that the scientist(s) used to research the topic.
Consider the way the topic was studied or how evidence was collected. Consult your article for this information. You do not need to conduct outside research.
Part 2: Fundamental Questions About the Natural World
In this section, you will identify questions you want to answer about your topic. Your finalized question will directly influence the hypothesis you write. Finally, you will consider how your opinions and experiences affected the focus of your hypothesis.
Finalize your research question related to the main idea in the news story you selected.
Your finalized question will be based on the questions you began working with earlier in the course.
Propose a hypothesis based on your finalized research question.
Make sure your hypothesis is directly related to your finalized research question and is both testable and falsifiable.
Explain how your personal beliefs, assumptions, and values influenced how you approached writing your hypothesis.
Think about your preexisting opinions and knowledge about the topic. How might they have affected the focus of your hypothesis?
Part 3: Major Developments in the Natural Sciences
In this section, you will research a significant advancement, discovery, or event that has affected how scientists research your topic. You will also explore the interrelationship between science and ethics.
Describe one major development in the natural sciences that has impacted how your topic was or may be studied.
In other words, what advancements or events have changed how scientists research your topic?
Describe the contributions of a scientist (or group of scientists) who was involved in the major development relevant to your topic.
You might consider the scientist’s motivations to study the topic, the challenges they encountered, or how their research changed how we think about the topic.
Discuss how an ethical issue might impact research on your topic.
Some examples of ethical issues in science include bias in research, the impact of politics on science, research funding sources, objectivity in science, or the spread of scientific misinformation.
Part 4: The Value of Studying the Natural Sciences
In this section, you will reflect on the benefit of having a deeper understanding of the natural sciences to you personally and to society as a whole.
Explain how viewing the world through a scientific lens may influence your personal life.
In other words, how might applying scientific inquiry skills to your daily experiences help you better understand them or take action?
Articulate how being a more scientifically informed citizen may affect your relationship with your community.
Think about challenges or opportunities in your community. How might being more scientifically literate benefit your community?
Discuss how being a more scientifically informed citizen may help you understand global contemporary issues.
Consider how being scientifically literate could influence how you approach current challenges or questions in the world, even outside the sciences. -

Finding Common Ground: A Middle Ground Solution for School Dress Codes “Academic Writing: Guidelines and Best Practices”
As you learned in this unit, a Rogerian argument is one that presents two sides of a debate and argues for a solution that will satisfy both sides. Given the two articles linked below that present opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools vs. some kind of ‘dress code’), construct your own 2-3 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a concrete, workable solution or “middle ground.”
The essay should contain the following components:
❒ 1. An introduction that accurately presents both sources (i.e., author, title, year of publication, and their relative position in the debate), as well as your middle ground thesis statement.
❒ 2. A body paragraph that summarizes the pro-uniform rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Anderson).
❒ 3. A body paragraph that summarizes the anti-uniform/pro-dress code rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Deane).
❒ 4. A body paragraph that critically compares and contrasts both sides of the debate.
❒ 5. A conclusion that further develops your proposed middle-ground solution and demonstrates how it satisfies both sides of the debate.
Article 1: “School Dress Codes and Uniforms Policies”
Article 2: “Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms”

Title: Supporting Literacy Instruction: Understanding the Science of Reading and Essential Components of Literacy in the Primary Grades
Supporting teachers in designing appropriate literacy instruction requires that the reading/literacy specialists understand the science of reading and the essential components of literacy. Students who have a strong foundation in literacy have later success as readers and writers as well as in other content areas. It is critical in supporting student success that reading/literacy specialists assist teachers in planning and implementing research-based best practices in the components of literacy.
For this assignment, select a grade band (pre-K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12). (USE PRE-K-2) Create a resource that can be used with educators in the selected grade band on the science of reading and components of literacy. Choose one of the following deliverables to complete this assignment:
(I choose a brochure)
Brochure, including documentation of resources
500-750 word blog post, including documentation of resources
Utilizing the deliverable choice, present the following information to educators:
Explanation of the science of reading, including the simple view of reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope.
Description of the five components of literacy, why they are important, and how they affect students’ mastery of reading (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension).
At least one evidence-based instructional strategy for each component (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) that would support students’ development of literacy skills.
At least one strategy to differentiate reading instruction for each of the following groups of students: English language learners, students with dyslexia, students with specific learning disabilities, and accelerated students.
Support your presentation with 3-5 scholarly resources.
Include graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately. -

Finding Common Ground: A Rogerian Argument on LGBTQ+ Acceptance and Mental Health “Reconciling Opposing Views: A Look at Diversity, Poverty, and Language in Modern Society” “Finding Common Ground: Exploring Controversial Topics through Rogerian Essays”
Learning Objectives
Compose a Rogerian Argument Essay maintaining a formal, academic tone.
Select an adequate topic for a Rogerian Argument Essay.
Use research that is appropriate and adequate to support one’s claims in an essay
Evaluate the logic of and rhetorical devices used in the arguments of others.
Evaluate the central idea, and support provided for that idea, in the writings of others.
Distinguish factual statements from judgmental statements and knowledge from opinion.
Evaluate claims and arguments for validity and reliability.
Appraise the work of peers based on a rubric or set of specified criteria.
Introduction: Rogerian Argument Essay
When most of us think of argument, we think about winners of arguments and losers of arguments. Arguments, even sometimes academic arguments, can be strong and forceful. An Aristotelian or classical argument is a strong, “this is my assertion and here’s why I am right” kind of argument. But that kind of argument isn’t going to work in all situations. When your audience is a really difficult one in the sense that you know your audience isn’t going to completely agree with your side of the issue, it can be a good idea to try to find a middle ground. The Rogerian argument finds that middle ground.
Based on the work of psychologist Carl RogersLinks to an external site. a Rogerian argument focuses on finding a middle ground between the author and the audience. This type of argument can be extremely persuasive and can help you, as a writer, understand your own biases and how you might work to find common ground with others.
Here is a summary of the basic strategy for a Rogerian argument:
In your essay, first, introduce the problem.
Acknowledge the other side before you present your side of the issue. This may take several paragraphs.
Next, you should carefully present your side of the issue in a way that does not dismiss the other side. This may also take several paragraphs.
You should then work to bring the two sides together. Help your audience see the benefits of the middle ground. Make your proposal for the middle ground here, and be sure to use an even, respectful tone. This should be a key focus of your essay and may take several paragraphs.
Finally, in your conclusion, remind your audience of the balanced perspective you have presented and make it clear how both sides benefit when they meet in the middle.
Assignment
In our professional readings thus far, we have explored a variety of ethical issues, some of which have (hopefully) been important to you. For this assignment, I would like you to choose an ethical issue that you have discovered in your readings in this class so far, either in the assigned essays or in those you have read from The Best American Essays collection. Therefore, your first source must be from one of the class readings.
Next, you will develop two different perspectives about this ethical issue, find common ground between these two views and take a position that carefully considers both sides of the issue. See the Rogerian Argument introduction above and the Textbook Readings on Rogerian Argument for more guidance on this essay’s rhetorical methods.
To develop your position, you will need two (2) additional credible sources that explore this ethical issue (from the library databases)
For inspiration and ideas, review the readings in the class so far, including those from The Best American Essays collections.
You will also be required to use the outline template below for this essay.
Choosing a Topic
I recommend choosing an ethical issue that you have some kind of connection with. Then, create an open-ended question that can be explored in a Rogerian argument that examines more than one answer. Some example questions from the readings (including the corresponding authors) include:
How has a historical and contemporary lack of LGBTQ+ acceptance impacted the mental health of this community? (Sedaris)
What should be the limits of invention in creative nonfiction? (Sedaris)
Why are King’s radical methods of achieving a diverse, egalitarian society still relevant today? (King)
Who should be responsible for helping people living in poverty? (Hardin)
To what extent is the acceptance of diverse languages crucial for an ethical society? (Anzaldua)
Throughout your essay, please:
Use several specific examples (brief summaries, paraphrases and quotes) from your chosen texts to develop the key ideas for someone who hasn’t read them.
Use objective, unbiased language to present both sides of the argument
Explain each example for your reader and use your critical voice to support your points. You may also include your own specific, detailed examples from experience.
Use signal phrases (Orwell) and vigorous verbs (claims, argues, disagrees, describes) to indicate authorial action.
Use transitional expressions and the repetition of key ideas to connect all the parts of your essay.

A 52-year-old man presents to your office for an acute visit because
of coughing and shortness of breath. He is well known to you because of
multiple office visits in the past few years for similar reasons. He has
a chronic “smoker’s cough,” but reports that in the past 2 days his
cough has increased, his sputum has changed from white to green in
color, and he has had to increase the frequency with which he uses his
albuterol inhaler. He denies having a fever, chest pain, peripheral
edema, or other symptoms. His medical history is significant for
hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, and two hospitalizations for
pneumonia in the past 5 years. He has a 40 year history of smoking and
continues to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day.
What is the probable diagnosis?
What are other possible diagnoses?
At this stage of the case study, what diagnostic studies and basic treatments are most appropriate to order and why?

Title: “The Importance of Qualifiers and Counter-Arguments in Crafting a Strong Thesis Statement”
This assignment will be graded more rigorously than some of the other small assignments.
Submit the following three things. The total response should be at least 200 words.
1) Your thesis statement (one or two sentences expressing the main point you want to make in the paper). See Purdue OWL for more on thesis statementsLinks to an external site..
2) One qualifier for your argument. A qualifier is a limitation that you place on the scope of your own argument. (More on this below.)
3) One counter-argument that you will respond to in your argument, meaning a point that someone might raise against your argument.
4) Your response to the counter-argument.
If you feel good about these elements of argumentation, then you can enter them and move on with your day. If you’re struggling with these concepts, read the text immediately below.
What’s the difference between a qualifier and counter-argument?
Short answer: A qualifier is a point you need to concede (give up) in order to keep yourself honest. A counter-argument is a point you’re willing to fight for.
Long answer: Qualifiers are limitations that you place on the scope of your own argument. For instance, someone arguing for stricter gun laws in the US would qualify his or her argument by acknowledging that most gun owners are law-abiding citizens who own their guns for perfectly legitimate recreational or self-dense purposes. This qualifier might be followed by various arguments about how even if a gun is owned by a law-abiding citizen, gun ownership still makes tragedies more likely, but the key point here is that by stating the qualifier (most gun owners are safe and law-abiding), the person making the argument has avoided stereotyping gun owners and unhinged maniacs on the verge of a rampage. To spin it the other way, a person arguing for protections on gun ownership rights ought to include a qualifier that in the wrong hands or circumstances, guns can generate horrific tragedies. That person could then go on to argue about the importance of self-defense and the rights of individuals, but the point here is that the qualifier helps keep the argument both reasonable and civil.
But there is a more important reason to include qualifiers: they allow you to set the boundaries of your own argument so others don’t misrepresent your argument as being more extreme than it is. Another example of a qualifier comes from Elizabeth Carll; while she is arguing that sometimes, violent video games can lead to violence, she is also quick to point out that “not all people who play video games will commit violent crimes.” By doing this, she is keeping herself honest. But perhaps more importantly, she is preventing others from misrepresenting her argument. That’s one of the benefits of a good qualifier: it keeps others from misrepresenting your argument as being more extreme than it actually is.
In contrast, a counter-argument is an objection to your argument that you are not willing to agree with or concede. It’s something you’re willing to fight against. It involves stating directly a point that someone has made or could make against you, and then showing why that point is either wrong or misguided. To be clear, a counter-argument is not simply “the opposite” of whatever you’re saying. Instead, it’s a targetted objection, which you then proceed to either refute (discredit/show that it’s wrong or that it doesn’t apply) or appropriate (say that it’s partly right but that it misses the bigger picture). For more on this, read the primer on rhetoric.
