“The Haunting Truth: A Close Reading of Anne Sexton’s ‘Ghosts’”
Paper 1: Close Reading
How we got here: In the quest to legitimize poetry, there’s always been a voice demanding
structure. What is poetry if not rigid structure and wordplay? How can we have an artform that
doesn’t adhere to the rules of what art is? The quintessential poet is a vagabond, either a beggar
or someone who’s made a living doing something else. What value do poets have to a society
with bigger problems to worry about? Is there a value?
Some context: Anne Sexton is considered to be one of the original “Confessional Poets.” Her
work, along with the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, and others, reaches out to connect
with readers under highly uncommon circumstances. Her poetry is intended to appeal to the part
of us that lives in a real world and doesn’t care much for social mores. But Sidney’s fight bears
repeating: if poetry is helpless and in need of defense, should that apply to all poetry? Can we
find something valuable in things that seem kind of rambly or trashy? Is there any message worth
digging out of this?
The assignment: In 4-6 pages, apply your analysis of Anne Sexton’s poetry in the form of a close
reading essay. When you wrote your response essays for Sexton, you chose a poem from the
packet. Use the space of this essay to utilize your annotations and present a thesis-driven essay
arguing your perspective. Review your chosen poem in terms of content and construction.
**If you did not submit a response paper for Anne Sexton, please choose a poem that was not
discussed in class. The content of your essay should be your own ideas and not a summary of
someone else’s. This is a conversation between you and the primary text. Please do not use
outside sources for this assignment.
While preparing your analysis, consider the issues that may matter. What methods does Sexton
use to speak about taboos among a mixed audience? If you argue that her attempts are
unsuccessful, where do they fail? If your perspective is that she is speaking for someone who
deserves to be heard, how does the text support your claims? Look at every line with a critical
eye and explain what you see. The why is more important than the what in this case. This is a
paper expressing your perspective about your poem of choice.
Remember to parse your source text for everything it has to offer. Relate your interpretation of
the source material, and be sure to think critically about the needs of people who disagree with
yourself as well. Dig deeply enough to establish connections. And don’t forget to make sure to
state and argue a thesis.
If you’re still struggling with the concept of Close Reading after our class discussions, Harvard
University provides a step-by-step guide for reference:
http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/how-do-close-reading
THe poems:ghosts
Some ghosts are women,
niether abstract nor pale,
their breastsas limp as killed.
Not witches,but ghosts
who come,moving their useless arms
like forsaken servants.
Not all ghosts are women,
I have seen others;
fat,white-bellied men,
wearing their genitals like old rags.
Not devils,but ghosts.
This one thumps barefoot,lurching
above my bed.
But that isn’t all.
Some ghosts are children.
Not angels,but ghosts;
curling like pink tea cups
on any pillow , or kicking,
showing thier innocent bottoms,wailing
for Lucifer. -

“Ethical Reflections on Artificial Intelligence: Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Emerging Labor Issues” “Exploring the Ethical Implications of Technology in the Workplace: A Reflection on Bioethics and Social Work Perspectives”
1st Paper: In this pre-workshop reading reflection, you will write a 600-800 word essay (approx. 2-3 pages double spaced). Your
response should substantially and thoughtfully engage with AT LEAST THREE readings – including at least one
from EACH of the disciplinary perspectives (Moral/Political Philosophy & Media Studies). Reflection papers
should not be summaries but, rather, are opportunities for you to critically reflect on readings from both disciplines, and
to use these readings to engage thoughtfully with the ethical themes related to the topic of technology, such as the
relationship between knowledge, power, and surveillance. You are encouraged to identify questions, connections to
other readings, and ideas triggered by the readings

2nd Paper: In this pre-workshop reading reflection, you will write a 600-800 word essay (approx. 2-3 pages double spaced) that
responds to the following lines of inquiry, in light of the readings:
1) What difference (if any) does it makes that any given observer of (or contributor to) the debate over the
ethical management of Artificial Intelligence possesses certain prior theological or philosophical commitments?
(i.e., does it matter that one’s starting point includes a theistic worldview, or perhaps a proclivity towards
embracing consequentialism or deontology, etc.?); and
2) How would you characterize the existing and the expected effect of a rapid acceleration of the use of Artificial
Intelligence in the workplace? Based on what you know (and what you read for today’s unit of our course), do
you expect an amplification of currently observed effects, or might we expect something qualitatively different
from what we have witnessed thus far?; and
3) What labor issues are emerging from the use of algorithmic management? In what ways are these distinct
from ethical issues that have arisen in the workplace previously?

Title: Training Program Proposal for XYZ Organization
As part of this course, you will develop a training program for an organization or group. If possible, you should select a project that relates to something in which you are already involved (job, volunteerism, etc.), so your project can be anchored in an applied setting. However, that may not be possible in all situations. Normally, a needs assessment should be conducted to determine the best course of action. That isn’t particularly feasible within the time frame of this course, so we will assume a needs assessment has been conducted and proceed to development of the training.
The project proposal is 400-600 words, explaining the training you are proposing. First, provide an executive summary describing the need for the training and the organization or group. Then, include the following areas (see Chapter 5 Introduction):
Objectives
What are the goals for learning?
What should the learner be able to do better as a result of completing your program?
Content
What is being learned?
What level of proficiency should a learner reach?
Activities
How are learners learning?
What kinds of activities will they engage in to learn the content better?
Materials and resources
With what are learners learning?
Are books, videos, or other materials required?
Grouping
With whom are learners learning?
Are they learning alone or with others?
Location
Where are learners learning?
Is the training online or in-person? If online, is it synchronous or asynchronous?
Time
When are learners learning?
How long is the program?
Instructor/Trainer role
How is the instructor facilitating/guiding learning?
What do you expect the instructor to do (e.g. providing feedback, providing instruction, providing coaching)?
Assessment
How is learning progress being assessed?
How will you know the program is effective?
Remember that this is a proposal, so these descriptions are only preliminary at this point. This information can and should change as you continue to develop your project. Provide a narrative description for each of the nine areas. Please include the headings for each area, but do not include the questions provided above in your submission.
