ASSIGNMENT: Following the Topic Selection Guidelines below, choose an argumentative topic to research. This will be your topic throughout the entire course, so the activities required for this assignment will provide the foundation for your future Touchstones. The topic for an argumentative research paper must be an arguable topic, meaning that it involves a stance that advocates for a concrete course of action and at least three supporting reasons which are defensible with credible sources. Additionally, it must take a stance that someone could hypothetically disagree with. You will need to take a firm position on the topic and use evidence and logic to support the position. Touchstone 1.2 includes a research question, a working thesis, a detailed outline, and a reflection on this pre-writing process.
A. Topic Selection Guidelines
DIRECTIONS: You may choose any topic you wish as long as the stance is arguable and the supporting reasons are defensible with evidence. Your topic should be current, appropriate for an academic context and should have a focus suitable for a 6-8 page essay.
In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.
EXAMPLE THESIS STATEMENTS
1) Rather than ending at age eighteen, compulsory education in the United States should be lifelong in order to improve civic engagement, teach new skills, and stave off cognitive decline, thus extending life expectancies.
2) Local governments, businesses, and property owners should replace conventional grass lawns with clover lawns in order to create habitat for pollinators, save water, and reduce maintenance, which will also lower carbon emissions.
3) Colleges and universities should prioritize academic freedom for students because sensitive discussions on difficult topics are necessary for students to learn, confidence in their own expertise is essential to teachers being effective, and students should be prepared to be exposed to many different opinions.
B. Research Guidelines
DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.
1. Research Question and Working Thesis
Keep in mind: The research question and working thesis are the driving force behind your research and eventual argument.
❒ Your research question should be a single sentence, framed as an actionable statement that takes a clear position on the research question and includes three main supporting points for holding that position.
❒ Your working thesis should be a single focused sentence, framed as a statement that takes a clear position on the research question.
❒ Include your research question followed by your working thesis.
2. Detailed Outline
Keep in mind: Your detailed outline provides a map of the argumentative research essay that you will write in Touchstone 3.2, including your key claims and the sources that support them. You might not have all seven required sources yet, and that is fine. The outline is a way to organize your essay and determine which areas (e.g. your sub-points) will require researched evidence as support.
❒ Headings: one for each paragraph with a brief label of the paragraph’s controlling ideas.
❒ An introduction, at least five body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
❒ Introduction includes your working thesis.
❒ Body paragraphs should each have their own unique title and key points.
❒ At least one body paragraph is devoted to addressing counterarguments.
❒ Conclusion includes notes on your final thoughts.
❒ Subheadings: two to five for each paragraph, below each heading, indicating key points that support the controlling idea
❒ Sources: one to three for each paragraph, as relevant, indicating the support for the key points. Do not over-rely on any single source.
❒ For each source, include the author’s name and the idea or information relevant to your argument (e.g. “Lappé (2017) on mono-cropping corn/soy and production”). Link with a website if it is available.
3. Reflection
❒ Have you displayed a clear understanding of the research activities?
❒ Have you answered all reflection questions thoughtfully and included insights, observations, and/or examples in all responses?
❒ Are your answers included on a separate page below the main assignment?
C. Reflection Questions
DIRECTIONS: Below your assignment, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.
1. Learning to conduct research is important because it is a skill you will use both in academia and in your professional life. It improves critical thinking and empowers you to find information for yourself. Consider the process of researching as a whole. What was the most challenging aspect of the process for you? (2-3 sentences)
2. The working thesis statement is a proposed answer to your research question. It should clearly identify an arguable topic and take a position on one side of that topic. Analyze the effectiveness of your working thesis statement. (3-4 sentences)
3. A detailed outline is an effective tool for laying out the progression of an argument. It allows you to consider the arrangement and organization of your ideas, as well as choose places to incorporate outside source materials. Review your detailed outline and summarize the argument you’ve presented. (3-4 sentences)
4. You will use the same topic on three of the remaining Touchstones in this course. What kind of feedback would be helpful for you? What are specific questions you might have as you go deeper into the research process? (2-3 sentences)
E. Requirements
The following requirements must be met for your submission to be graded:
Double-space the outline and use one-inch margins.
Use a readable 12-point font.
All writing must be appropriate for an academic context.
Composition must be original and written for this assignment.
Use of generative chatbot artificial intelligence tools (ChatGPT, Bing Chat, Bard) in place of original writing is strictly prohibited for this assignment.
Plagiarism of any kind is strictly prohibited.
Submission must include your name, the name of the course, the date, and the title of your composition.
Submission must include your research question, working thesis, outline, and reflection questions.
Include all of the assignment components in a single file.
Acceptable file formats include .doc and .docx.

“Categorical Perception: Discrimination in Speech Stimuli – A Coglab Report” “Categorical Perception: Identification of Speech Stimuli”
The lab report should be about the Coglabs that were completed for class. You should be explaining what happened in each of the Coglabs and explaining their subsequent results. For this paper, the only time it would make sense to use sources other than Coglab is in the intro and discussion sections to support your explanation of a concept. The methods and results section should speak strictly to what you did in the Coglab. Stuff regarding the topic, Categorical Perception: Discrimination
Background
People perceive most stimuli continuously. For example, when you look at a rainbow, you see a smooth transition from red to yellow (like the image below):
Continuous Perception
You usually do not perceive stimuli categorically. Categorical perception means that you see either pure red or pure yellow and nothing in between (like the image below):
Categrical Perception
This is called “categorical” perception because, instead of getting a percept that is ambiguous, you get a percept that perfectly matches an ideal example of a particular category. One thing that people seem to perceive categorically is speech (Harnard, 1987). What is interesting about this is that even when the physical stimuli change continuously (like the upper image), people perceive it categorically (like the lower image).
For example, both /b/ and /p/ are stop consonants: To produce these, you close your lips, then open them, release some air, and the vocal chords begin vibrating. Hold your hand in front of your mouth and say /ba/ and then /pa/. The difference between /ba/ and /pa/ is the time between the release of the air and the beginning of the vibration. This is referred to as voice onset time or VOT. For /b/, VOT is very short. Voicing begins at almost the same time as the air is released. For /p/, the voicing is delayed.
Researchers can construct a series of stimuli in which the VOT changes in small steps. When people are asked to identify these stimuli, they generally have no difficulty: The first few are identified as /b/ and the second few are identified as /p/. What is most interesting is how the middle items are identified. Unlike most other stimuli, people do not report hearing something that is a bit like /b/ and a bit like /p/. Rather, they report hearing either /b/ or /p/.
To demonstrate categorical perception of speech stimuli, you really need two different measures. This lab provides one of those measures: it examines your ability to tell whether two sounds are the same or different. The second (which is provided in the Categorical Perception: Identification experiment) lets you find the point at which your percept changes from /ba/ to /pa/ through an identification task.
The stimuli used in this lab are artificial: they were generated by a speech synthesizer. The reason is to ensure that the only difference between the stimuli is the VOT.
Instructions
If you have logged in, you’ll see a rectangle below. Make sure that you can see the full area before you begin the lab.
On each trial, you will hear two sounds. Your task is to report whether they are the same or different.
Occasionally, the sounds that are played may be distorted. If you did not hear the sound clearly, you can re-play the sounds.
There are a total of 70 trials.
At the end of the experiment, you will be asked if you want to save your data to a set of global data. After you answer the question, a new Web page window will appear that includes a debriefing, your data, your group’s data, and the global data.
Tablet Specific Details
If you are using a tablet, tap the Start Next Trial button to begin. Tap either the Same or Different button to indicate whether the two sounds were the same or different. Tap Replay to hear the sounds again.
Computer Specific Details
If you are using a computer, click the Start Next Trial button to begin. Click either the Same or Different button to indicate whether the two sounds were the same or different. Click Replay to hear the sounds again. More stuff about the topic, Categorical Perception: Identification

Using Jupyter, create one variable by asking the user ( for example, your colleague) why she/he enrolled in this program and a second one by asking what they want to learn from this course; print both. You can come up with any two questions you want with any audience you prefer, as long as they shape a dialogue sequence.
Submission Instructions
Assignment solution should have a structure: Title page (your name, course name, term, my name), Introduction, Body/Analysis, Conclusions, and References. The actual solution code would go into the Body/Analysis section.
Figure captions should follow the APA format.
Your submission is a Jupyter Notebook (,ipynb) with a (.PDF or .HTML) file. These would include all the text, code, results, plots, images, etc.
Submit the following files:

o ALY2100_FirstnameLastname_WeekX_Term_Year.html or ALY2100_FirstnameLastname_WeekX_Term_Year.pdf
If you use any existing code extracted from www, cite the source. Make sure the whole code runs without any bugs, and explain well what you did so I can be sure you understand and are learning the material. TurnItIn will pick up similarities, and depending on how you modify the code and give explanations, I can disregard the level of similarity.

“Analyzing a Manufacturing Company: A Case Study of [Company Name]” Analysis of [Company Name]: A Comprehensive Study of Manufacturing Companies
Part 1 of the case, due in Unit 4, includes four elements: (1) creating the title page, (2) the abstract, (3) the APA-formatted Level 1 headings and Level 2 subheadings, and (4) a properly formatted preliminary reference list for a formal analysis paper.
The case project spans Unit 4, Unit 7, and Unit 9. For the case project, you are to conduct research and complete an analysis of a manufacturing company. A list of 31 manufacturing organizations has been compiled from which you are to choose your organization for analysis.
Important Note: Do not delay — Read all instructions and start work on your project immediately during Unit 1. The Unit 7 Case Project Paper cannot be submitted later than the end of Unit 8. If you do not understand any aspect of the assignment, ask the instructor.
Your project organization must be selected from the approved case company list located in the Assignment Instructions tab.
Only the title page, abstract, properly APA-formatted headings and subheadings for the final analysis paper and preliminary reference list are due in Unit 4.
The full case study will be due in Unit 7.
A PowerPoint presentation for the case will be due in Unit 9.
The case project should be considered a single assignment, not three separate assignments. Therefore, do not overemphasize the score on any single component of the case. Rather, take a broader and more accurate view of the case project as a single unified assignment worth a total of 200 points. The case project point distribution is as follows:
Part I (Due Unit 4) -The initial formatting/outline = 25 Points Part II (Due Unit 7) – The full paper (analysis) = 100 Points Part III (Due Unit 9) – The case PPT presentation = 75 Points Total Case Assignment Points = 200 Points
The textbook, assignment instructions, classroom/course assignment instructions, etc. use several terms interchangeably. The following terms can be understood as referring to your project or individual elements of the project: case project, project, case or case paper. If you have any questions about any of the terminology, please do not hesitate to ask in the Virtual Office.
Much of the case project will be an exercise in developing your skill at following instructions. Therefore, be sure to read all assignment instructions (for all Units — 4, 7, and 9) very carefully before starting the writing process.
Gentle Reminder: If you do not understand plagiarism and how to avoid violating the rules of academic integrity, please review the tutorial in the classroom titled “Plagiarism.” It can be found under the Academic Tools tab. All written papers (and many of the Discussion Board posts) will be submitted to Turnitin to determine originality of content.
Review the detailed instructions by clicking on the Assignment Instructions tab
ASSIGNMENT TAB: Part 1 of the case, due in Unit 4, includes creating the title page, abstract, Level 1 APA headings and Level 2 & 3 APA subheadings, and preliminary reference list for a formal analysis paper. However, you must preview the Units 7 and 9 assignment instructions also to fully understand the requirements for the Unit 4 Case Assignment.
The order of presentation must follow the grading rubric order.
Be thorough! Short answers do not provide the necessary analysis or critical thinking. Be sure to complete all required rubric sections for all parts.
Important Notes: Your Unit 4 Assignment should only include sufficient page length to include: title page, abstract, full paper headings and subheadings (which will be used for the full analysis in Unit 7) and a preliminary reference list.
Use the APA template provided in the classroom Course Resources as the foundation for constructing your Unit 4 Assignment, but do not submit your assignment with any of the original APA template content remaining in your assignment Word® document.
A properly formatted title page with running head and abstract is required.
Do not include a table of contents.
Do not repeat or copy the assignment question narratives. You may use abbreviated versions of the questions as headings and subheadings. Anything that artificially increases the length of the paper but does not add value to the analysis will result in a reduced score.
For more specific information and guidance, please access the following resources available in the writing resources located within the Academic Success Center area in the left navigation pane: “How to Write an Abstract”“How to Get Help with Your Writing”
“APA Headers and Title Page Tutorial”

After you have completed the Unit 4 Case Paper title page, abstract, outline, and preliminary reference list, upload your Word document to the Unit 4 Assignment Dropbox before 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday of Unit 4.
Your assignment filename must use this format: LastName _FirstName_Unit#_AssignmentName For example: Smith_Joan_Unit4_CasePart1.
Assignments submitted late will be subject to the Late Policy described in the Syllabus. GB519 Case Project: List of Manufacturing Companies for Analysis
